So I'm staying put and hoping after my phone call on Tuesday all is sorted...Thanks Macman(I think they are also giving me £45 for paperless billing too by using the pc so that brings that standing charge down still further:)

I managed to get to read my bills online eventually, submitted 2 meter readings, and i'm getting 540 pounds of a refund - i've already had 400 pounds earlier this year. I'm not that bothered the direct debits are that high, because I can get the refund any time I like, and it's a bit of a bonus.

I cancelled British Gas this morning easily...

NPower still say for me the Energy Online October 13 is the best tariff for me but though I get £100 back annually(Discount)the paperless billing is only £10 not £45.

I still hate the standing charges which means I am paying around £300 annually before I take any gas or electric and just like British Gas and even First Utilty there is a penalty clause of £30 on each supply if I leave before the year is up.

Seems crazy that I will trying "Not" to use the gas or electric and if I do for as little as possible and paying £300 for the priviledge...

Oh well what can you do...

Gosh! Have been reading this thread with keen interest.
Several members say they have the same 3 bed semi as me but pay shockingly high fuel costs.
You want to know how people have low fuel bills - I want to know how come yours is so high?

There has to be more to it than the number of people in the house as we are mum and dad and 2 adult children. Pay £66 per month and are up to date with bill.

You cannot possibly expect 'the same' 3 bed semis to have the same level of energy bills.
    Just some of the variables:
Different temp set on room stat and TRV's and length of time set on the programmer.
Amount of hot water used (size of family and how often they bath/shower).
Different weather conditions (aveage temp) in different parts of the country.
Different levels of insulation in the property (loft, cavity walls, double glazing, draught proofing)
    Different boiler efficiencies.
Different levels of electrical appliance use.
There are many more variables in addition to these, which make such comparisons meaningless.
Lastly, your monthly DD amount may have no correlation with your actual average usage. The only relevant figure is your annual kWH usage.
Tariff price differences can make 20% difference to the monthly DD amount alone, even if all the other variables did not exist.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Insulation and heating must play a large part in costs.
    Energy efficiency of white goods.
Boiler too! mine is about 10 years old and we have a water tank as that is what runs the power shower.

So you are happy giving your supplier an interest free loan - whilst they continue to raise their prices.... !!!
You ought to contact them and require them to reduce your direct debit
Surely - it is better for you to owe them - rather than vice versa ?

I'd rather overpay than underpay. And if I claim back every few months then they're not getting very much interest out of me - it's not like i'm losing some huge amounts of interest from the bank right now either.
