Thanks, much appreciated!
Seems daft then that it can be so much cheaper from Germany - nearly £40. Anyone know why it is so?
Sorry but the no VAT/no duty rule only applies to other businesses trading within Europe.
As an individual person, you will be liable for import duty on the item and you'll be charged VAT as well as VAT is due at the port of entry for goods, this being the UK.
The personal importation limit of £18 is used mainly for CD/DVD/s etc and permits for no duty/vat to be paid - so be careful on this purchase. There's no such things as free open competition and no trade barriers in Europe.Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Thanks for that information JasonLVC.
So is it highly likely that i will be charged VAT then and how does it work, do i just get a bill through the post? If i send the item back do i then not have to pay this bill as it dosent work out any cheaper if that is the case!0 -
I bought one from Blockbuster a few weeks ago - the advanced version, included one standrad game and a game of your choice (I bought Gears of War), wireless controllers etc.
It was the cheapest I could find at the time - £299.0 -

Usually the carrier (ie, dataforce, UPS, etc) will be charged by HMRC to the carrier at port of entry and so the carrier will send you a bill which when paid they'll then deliver - sometimes they deliver and then send you a bill - depends how much it's for - but if you don't pay it, the carrier will simply update your credit rating!.
Duties. I'm not at work at present so can't look it up so I can't tell you the import duty of an Xbox - remember a few years ago Sony tried to argue the PS2 was a computer as it got a reduced duty as opposed a games console which had a higher duty. It will be a % of the selling price, probably 2% or similar.
As for VAT, Amazon.de may very well charge you Dutch VAT within the price you've paid on screen and so you'll not need to pay VAT again (e, you've paid Dutch VAT not UK VAT) - but I've never used Amazon.de and so can't be sure how their checkout operates - usually European internet sites don't charge VAT if product going to another European country and then you get charged when you import it into the UK by UK VATMan (HMRC) - but it is possible they charge the VAT at point of purchase (ie, online) so you may need to email them to confirm the VAT liability.
VAT is a tax on the end consumer, whoever that person is....in this case....you!.Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.0 -
Are you sure there is duty payable within the EU? I didn't think so and this hmrc link seems to suggest not

Well it seems everyone has a different opinion on this then, see my post below; the respondedent to suggests that i will not...

Incidently i have paid German VAT on the item through my amazon.de purchase.
At the minute im hoping that those claiming i wont have to pay import tax are correct (or has there been a mix up between VAT and import tax?)0 -

Amazon.de will charge you German VAT (included in the price of the item) but you won't get charged it again when the goods come into the UK.
EU sales to private individuals within the EU should always include VAT at the rate of the country of sale.
Duty is not applicable to sales in the EU except for very specific commodities e.g tobacco.0 -
Yesterday I purchased the premium pack from amazon.de and it worked out at £233 inc. postage which seems pretty good to me.
My only concern, that has only just occured to me, is whether i will be charged VAT by customs? If I do its not much of a bargain! Does anyone know if i will or not?
(If i do can i send it back and therefore not have to pay it?)
How much was the premium pack showing at in euro ?0 -
The whole order works out at £223 (not £233), for the Premium Pack, delivered.0
