Hi Guys
I have a Advent laptop running Windows XP.
Last week I had a serious virus - Live Security Platinum which took over my whole computer and would not let me do anything.
I followed a website's recommendation of how to get rid of it (can't remember what it was now) and I basically went in to my laptop in safe mode with networking and did all my stuff from there.
I managed to sort my computer out but this week when my Windows Security Centre tried to update, it can't update the Malware Protection.
The error code is 0x80240022 and when I checked it is to do with my Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS).
I checked the microsoft website for a fix and it tells me to go to the services menu and fix BITS myself which I do but I don't actually have BITS listed.
I am assuming that I accidentally deleted it when I cleared up after the virus.
I have had a look around on the web but I cannot see how to get BITS back.
Just wondering if you can help?
Many Thanks

Windows Security Centre does not update Malware Protection.
Which Malware Protection would this be?
Do you mean Security Essentials?
If so, try updating manually.
When was the last time you did a full back up of your important data?
You should always be ready to do a Factory Restore or re-image at any time.0 -
The rootkit Sirefef aka ZeroAccess is known to delete some windows services - BITS being one of them.
It's an easy fix if the rootkit is no longer active (assuming that is the case).
We can check for it with DDS.
Download DDS from the link below and save it to your desktop:
Link
After you've downloaded it and saved it to your desktop:- Double click DDS to run it.
- When it's finished, DDS will open two logs:
- DDS.txt
- Attach.txt
Copy & paste the contents of just DDS.txt for now and post it here (you may need to split the log over separate posts)0 -
Thanks so much , here is my DDS log (Part 1):

Which Malware Protection would this be?
Do you mean Security Essentials?
If so, try updating manually.
When was the last time you did a full back up of your important data?
You should always be ready to do a Factory Restore or re-image at any time.
Thanks for replying.
Sorry for the confusion - I am only using Security Essentials but it then brought up Security Centre which is why I mentioned it.
I have not done a back up for a few months - I really need to get in to a routine of doing this.0 -
No sign of it there. I would guess MSE & HitmanPro got rid between them.
Post the contents of the other DDS log, attach.txt.
Then do this.
Download Farbar's Service Scanner from the link below and save it to your desktop.
LINK- Right click FSS.exe and choose "Run as Administrator" to run it.
- Allow any UAC prompt
- Check (tick) the following checkboxes
- Internet Services
Windows Firewall
System Restore
Security Center/Action Center
Windows Update
Windows Defender
Other Services
- Internet Services
- Click Scan
- When finished, notepad will open. Post the contents in your next reply.
