Have never heard of it happening tho, but is the energy you are using all going onto the "T" for total and you have been accidently set for single rate billing. Its very common for people to change to single rate, these meters can be easily set to register dual or single rate billing
If that is what has happened, just " T" for total and the day rate would move.

I have come across this with one specific Ampy model.

When I checked the manufacturers spec sheet, it confirmed that meter could be set to fit 2 sets of tails but record on 2 registers or 1. Where 1, it would record internally I believe but I can't remember that part now.

It would only display 1 register on the display though.

This I find is totally ridiculous since the industry Market Domain Data (MDD) does not allow this! Energy has to be recorded across both registers if the meter is allowed to set as standard rate.

It turned it to be an incorrectly configured batch by the Meter Operator.

I've also found over the years that a faulty time switch does occur on fitting more than you would think.

  • HiYa folks,

#4 """got a new meter yesterday"""

The O/P's had a new install for 24 hours and even if its 'aggregated' [single rate billing] its not accurately recording throughput on either register.

So what's the best course of action do you think I should take?

If you consider that your meter is not recording the night rate at all, and its not logging the units on the total, you are faced with a choice between informing the supplier or doing what a lot of people I meet with a meter problem, if its to their advantage, they sit back and do nothing. I see stopped meters, blank screens every month and they either are not aware of it or they just ignore it. Deep in the small print of the terms and conditions of all suppliers it says you should inform suppliers of faulty meters

its OK I've been on the phone this morning and they are looking into it and the woman who is dealing with my complaint is going to get back in touch tomorrow morning to tell me whats happening thanks guys
  • So.

We moved out. We read the meter. I rang them. They said 'your reading has not changed since March and I need to speak to a supervisor'. Call me back in 5. Say it is a major problem and that they need access to flat. Ask for landlords details. I give them agencies. (My agency is beyond poor). They say will phone back in 10. Its now 35.

It seems that when they came in to read the meter in March it was the same as it is now. We have never had any problems before so the only thing I can see is that.. well... it was ok from Jan 2010 to March 2012 when they came and looked at it. From 15 March 2012 to 28th Aug 2012 the readings didnt change. The only thing that did change from Jan 2010 was that people came to read the meter. It seems to me that it magically stopped working when the engineers came. Or they broke it. Or they turned it off. Hmm.

I am about £160.00 in credit. They won't tell me what's what until they check it again. So I don't know what's happening. I feel I am owed £160 but feel that they won't give it back because the meter stopped working the day the engineers came to read it. So... whose fault is that? I know I should have checked but now I am over 200 miles away...and they could make up any reading, or anything. I don't want to make a payment and feel I should have my credit back..and really it is not my fault it stopped working.

    Any advice?

To summarise the post above, the last meter reading was taken in March by Scottish Power, 'coincidentally' it appears our meter has not worked since then (the reading is still exactly the same).

We moved out of the property a couple of days ago and we are closing our account, but neither ourselves nor Scottish Power has any record of our Electric usage over the past 5 and a half months!

Can anybody advise us as to where we stand with this legally? Is there anything to stop them plucking a figure out of the air and charging us?!

They can attempt to estimate for the period it was a stopped meter but its important to remember that they will have no idea when it stopped so will look for evidence of readings showing no movement and will probably estimate from there onwards. If any earlier, they can't prove it was stopped so be careful with that.

The estimate is either based on previous consumption or by monitoring readings on the new one.

The first action is fitting a new meter. Then its addressing any billing.

They can't monitor it now as it would be based on a new tenant, so they will use previous bills.

Either way, its an estimate and should be disputed until you feel it is reasonable.

The meter reader can't cause this as it would requite internal access and the knowledge to do it.

It could also be a tamper hence them wanting to check, in which case it would mean a very different set of actions...not that I'm suggesting it is.
