Have you got an E7 meter which switches your heating on at night?

If so, you have 2 registers on the meter.

One is for the Day rate which covers everything you are using during its 17 day hours. The other is a Night rate which covers your heating (which is wired to the night consumer unit on your side) plus everything on your Day rate switches to this rate during its 7 hours off night usage.

So, only one moves at a time.

What are you seeing as it may be easier to help you diagnose the problem?

Assuming your meter looks something like this :

    34q5x15.jpg

As Terrylw1 says if you cycle [press the blue button in this example] it will show you the two different [day & night] usage rates .. .. for example if you were to :

Go out during the day and write down which rate number - RATE1/2/3/4/ is moving and what that number is, for example RATE4 37664
Go out during the night and write down which rate number - RATE1/2/3/4/ is moving and what that number is, for example RATE1 66543

You would know now and for future billing purposes which was your cheap [night] and expensive [day] rate readings. You should write down and record photograph] these for future reference and yes as Terrylw1 says only one set of RATE numbers should move at a time.

NOTE : if you find the search this forum box in the TRHS and put in these exact two letters >>> E7 <<< you will find hundreds of people just like yourself looking for, and getting info. Have a read through the answers then come back and ask your questions. Best of luck.

    - take both the day & night rate numbers now and post here today, then do the same at the same time tomorrow, for a comparison.

Your system allows for both water & heat storage. I'm assuming both heaters & water are currently turned off so please turn on your water heating now this afternoon, it will come on midnight [ish] and go off at breakfast time [ish].

    - then repost the numbers as they show tomorrow, and we will see if they move.

Ok ! - don't forget to turn on your overnight water heating now - not your immersion heater then post the new numbers tomorrow, and don't forget to turn off your overnight water heating tomorrow assuming you don't normally use it.

Its also pretty easy to test since in your Night slot, boiling the kettle should make it move. If it doesn't, either you are doing it in the Day slot or its not moving the Night rate.

So, providing you have used something that you know of in the night, it should be easy to determine if its a faulty time switch.

If its faulty, your supplier will change it for you but you will get overbilled so you need a bill for this meter with a % applied to bill some of it on Night. You will need to check this is accurate.

Both registers move at the same speed, given the same current demand, but you pay less per unit on the night rate.

Had my hot water heater on and used the cooker and kettle when rate 2 was on and it's stayed the same

Faulty time switch then if it doesn't move.

So, it will need changing and your bill corrected as you get overcharged.
