Good Evening,
I am looking at planning a holiday to Malaysia/Singapore with my family (4 adults) and am astounded how much tax we have to pay to fly from Heathrow.
I just wondered if anybody had any suggestions on ways I could structure the journey to save on the airline tax. e.g fly via Paris
Any help would be appreciated

Won't change anything they're all a bunch of ......s,
but might may you feel better.0 -
Flying from other European airports can save money, but remember you'll need to get your ex UK flight well in advance, as if you are delayed you'll lose your main flight (and the return).0

Probably a bit out of the way for you but ..........
We have just booked flights with Emirates from Dublin to Kuala Lumpur via Dubai for next April and the total tax per person is 37.40 Euros which is about £27.30 :j0 -
Are you sure it's taxes? The only tax charged by the UK is APD. If it's in excess of that amount then it's not a tax but an airline charge designed to make it look as if the nasty government is forcing the airline to impose it.0

This.
The term used is usually "taxes and charges" - which could be a combination of several things:- APD - the actual tax
- Airport landing fees
- Airport security fees
- Anything else
Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
I beleive that in order to 'avoid' the iniquitous ADP you have to have at least 24 hours in the non charging country. Looked at going via Dublin or Amsterdam to the far east some time back, recall that accommodation costs would outweigh the tax savings.0

You're right on the fact that it won't make a difference, however there is a very easy mechanism for complaining to your MP via a new campaign:
http://www.afairtaxonflying.org/
It takes less than a minute, you enter your postcode, it tells you who your MP is. You fill in your details and hit submit and it sends a pre-written letter to your MP.
Even the airlines are pushing this one, flybe ahs asked all its customers to join!0 -

If I was an MP getting pre-written template letters, they'd be going straight into the "ignore" pile!
And obviously the airlines are pushing this one! While they go on about the economy or jobs etc. - what they actually mean is "I don't want to pay this tax", which is kinda stating the obvious really - how many people/companies enjoy paying tax?0 -

The same pile that the non template letters from constituents go into then! And obviously the airlines are pushing this one! But it's the passengers that pay the tax!0 -
Hi Frankie,
don't think this is right.
We live in UK,(Northern Ireland) and have travelled frequently to Dublin to take flights to USA, Far East, Australia and Europe and have never stayed before travel.
We book through a well known UK travel Agency in Belfast that has several offices in the South of Ireland and have never had a problem.
Only slight downside is you have to pay the fare in Euros.0
