steamed pudding recipes?

I am now the proud owner of my first pudding basin and I'd love to make some old fashioned steamed puddings. They seem that they would be cheap and filling, and as dd is very 'traditional' in her approach to food, I think they'd go down well.

Does anyone have any favourite recipes to share? I think jam, syrup and some fruits (oranges, lemons?) might be welcomed - not so sure about ones with things like dried fruit in such as spotted !!!!!!.

Do they need suet? I'm pretty sure this will be the only ingredient I don't have and I'm not sure I can get hold of any for a while, so non-suet ones would be great.

I don't have a microwave so hob or steamer methods would be appreciated too.

    You can make suet steamed puddings which are heavier and more filling but I prefer a simple sponge one myself.

    Grease the pudding basin and stick the flavour of you choise in the bottom, jam, golden syrup, marmalade.

    If you prefer to make an all over flavour pudding rather than one with syrup in the bottom of the dish, try mixing ground ginger, or dried fruit and peel into the sponge batter, or remove a tbsp of the flour and replace with cocoa powder for a choccy pud.

    Mix the sponge batter, 4oz of butter/marg, 4oz sugar, 4oz SR flour, 2 eggs and a splosh of milk. Beat and pour into the bowl.

    Cover the dish with pleated greaseproof or foil and pop into a pan of boiling water. Keep the water lever at about half way up the dish and steam for 2 1/2 hours.

    Enjoy - there is nothing as comforting as a sponge pud and custard.

    ummm yummy will have to give a syrup one a go, ive got a stonware one will that be ok to use in a suacepan?
