it could be mcafee that's causing the problem...download the removal tool on your other pc, save to desktop. download & save the avast installer too. Transfer both to the problem lappy via a usb stick, or burn to a cd.

Run mcafee removal tool, then install avast.

    Thanks mate

In the first link it says that if i am running windows vista i should just go to the add/remove programs in control panel and do it that way?

Do i need to download the MCPR.EXE file and do it that way?

    or just follow these instructions:

Uninstall your McAfee consumer products using Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel: Windows 7 and Vista users
    1. Close all McAfee program windows.
    2. Click Start, Search, type Programs and Features, and click Go.
    3. Double-click Programs and Features.
    4. Select McAfee SecurityCenter.
    5. Click Uninstall and follow any on-screen prompts
This is abit confusing aswell do i add/remove programs first and then also do a search for the programs and features as suggested above (wont that already be gone once i use the add/remove tool?)

    thanks

yes, by all means remove it via control panel > programs and features and uninstall everything called mcafee, but then run the removal tool which will get rid of the "hangover" bits that won't be properly removed by just uninstalling :)

not clear what you are connecting to and using?

    a 3 wireless dongle

    or

a wired or wireless router connected to an isp?

    or something else?

The laptop still connects when you hardwire it upstairs to a router, is this a wireless router, connected to an isp via landline. ie do you need mobile broadband in the house at all?

If youre dongle doesnt work, what happens?

No its not a wireless route mate its a plug in router (cable/dsl) i have two pc's connected to it upstairs+ playstation 3 etc

So i just unplug one of the connections that goes into one of the pc's and plug it into laptop and it gets internet then

I do need mobile broadband for the laptop deffo

When i connect the dongle, i get reception (full bars) then click to connect as always but then get the following error

    "the connection attempt failed"
"please make sure your device is connected to your computer and that your settings are correct........would you like to attempt to connect again now?.....yes/now"

this is the same error msg i had when i made this thread last month. Back then a system restore to a few days earlier sorted it out, but this time it didnt work and even a factory reset didnt work?

What do you think might be the problem?

    thanks

The mention of plugging things in upstairs, routers, and different virus scanners is confusing the issue.

Replacing the router upstairs with a wireless cable/dsl router will give you internet at home, assuming you laptop has a wireless card. Far easier than plugging in mobile broadband dongles. Presumably you want mobile broadband for when you are out and about?

The 3 mobile broadband not working is a different issue, presumably you have installed all the software that came with the dongle? Which dongle is it?

    Sorry mate

I think i provided all the info when i started the thread but its probably got confusing now......

I know i can get internet to the laptop via a wireless router but i still need the dongle to work, in fact the dongle is more important than anything to be honest.

Basically the dongle has stopped working, but i know from last time its not a dongle issue. I contacted three last time and went through all manner of checks but they said its a windows/hardware issue which is when we tried the system restore option and it worked.

The laptop is picking up wifi signals from other peoples houses and not displaying any device issues in device manager

This is a bit different from before, when it wouldnt pick up any wifi signals and loads of yellow trianlges, in device manager under network adapters and it wouldnt even connect to internet when hard wored via upstairs router.

This is whats most confusing as im getting the same error msg as i told you about in my last post but have tried the same to rectify it with no joy?
