  • Afternoon everyone.

Sorry I dont have time to read everything that's been going on in the Inn recently. I seem to be far too busy to much comping let alone chatting about comps :rotfl:

Nothing exciting at my end apart from Ive actually got the washing on the line :D

I have now got a couple of hours to get my 80 or so dailies in and any comps that finish tomorrow. I might have another hour or so to pop in later to say hi properly.

Hope we all have a good friday.

    Hiya all!

Hugs and Kisses to those that need them,

Alice has now been home for a week but what a week

Warning this is a very long post!

we hit problems on Friday the second day as Alice told me that she wanted to sit on the toilet at 10:30am but unfortunately she had to wait a long time until the carers came again at 1:00pm imagine my shock and horror when the carers came but said that they where unable to toilet Alice as the OT had sent her home with a full hoist sling and that they needed a toileting sling to lift her and put her on the toilet

I phoned the OT department who said that they couldn't issue Alice with a toileting sling as in there opinion it was unsafe to do so I asked what was she supposed to do, and she said that she would have to do it in her pad, I said that this was totally unacceptable and that I wouldn't allow it to happen and I told the OT worker that it was everyone's basic human right that they should be able to go to the toilet - I then proceeded to make numerous phone calls to the hospital Social worker the district nurse, Alice's GP, social services and finally the care providers (I don't give up very easily)

I couldn't get through to speak to most of them straight away and when I did speak to them they nearly all said that they would have to phone me back

the hospital Social worker said that he couldn't help and just referred me back to the hospital OT, the district nurse said that she would come out to see me as soon as possible, Alice's GP said that the Care providers needed to do there own assessment, and the care providers said that they would send two senior members to assess the situation but not one of them could give me the basic answer as to when Alice would be able to go to the toilet

the district nurse and the care providers arrived more or less together and was discussing the situation between themselves meanwhile Alice was getting very agitated and emotional distressed while they where looking into what equipment the OT department had sent out the discovered that the OT department had promised to send a full hospital profiling bed because of Alice having pressure sores, but they had only sent a mattress topper which had made the bed in there opinion dangerously high the district nurse managed to obtain a direct number to the head of OT and demanded that they sentd me a full profiling bed OT then tried to say that I had refused a full profiling bed the DN the asked me if this what true and I said no so the DN then said to the OT that the bed was required and that as it was 3pm on a Friday that she needed the bed before the end of the day OT then asked if I could get rid of my bed at such a short notice I said that I could and they agreed to send a full hospital profiling bed which arrived at 5pm and was fully operational by 5-15pm

in the mean time the two senior members of the care company said that they would be able to use the full hoist sling but that it wasn't ideal because they would have to hoist her onto the bed and undress her and then hoist her back up again and put her back on the commode at around about 3:30pm Alice finally got to go to the toilet

Saturday was an OK day with no real problems at all until Sunday afternoon when the s-hit really hit the fan (excuse my graphic language)
Alice was complaining about feeling very unwell and with severe belly ache and pain in the bottom of her back, I immediately recognized this as been the symptoms of a UTI (urinary tract infection) so I called GO To Doc who sent out a doctor within half an hour and confirmed my suspicions when he emptied the leg bag there was a very nasty strong smell and I thought to myself I have smelled that smell somewhere before and I then realized that it was in the morning when they had emptied Alice's night bag so the carers my first line of defense failed to pick up on the nasty smell and associate it with a possible UTI, I said to the doctor that I didn't want Alice going back into hospital as I had just fought tooth and nail over the last 6 weeks to get her back home - he said that he understood and that the UTI would be treatable at home with anti-biotics

Monday morning I telephoned the physio department to see if they had ordered Alice a new wheel chair as they had previously agreed after being given the runaround for most of the day I finally managed to get through to someone from physio who said that the light weight aluminum transit wheelchair would be suitable for the house and that I didn't require a heavy duty wheel chair as they said because Alice is fully incontinent she doesn't need one because she wouldn't be able to go out of the flat for a long period of time but if I still insisted that I wanted one I would have to contact the community wheelchair assessment team

Tuesday the hot water storage unit stopped working properly as the 1 hour booster button had stopped working the electrician came and said that an element had gone in the boiler and that he would have to get the plumber to take out the whole hot water storage unit to fix it

so I had to get my hot water from out of the shower

Wednesday morning the carers came and said that they have been told by there office that they can no longer shower Alice as the OT department have sent a commode on wheels which is going rusty and it's against there health and safety policy and that OT should have sent a glide in shower chair

the joiner came to change all of the window locks as we weren't given any keys for the windows when we first moved in and as there had been 2 break ins in one of the blocks over the weekend

Wednesday evening the next door neighbor knocked on my door to say that the main front door wasn't locking so I had to phone the joiner out again and he had to fit a new lock on the door

Thursday morning I noticed that there wasn't any urine in Alice's night bag and became concerned about it so much so that I told the district nurse who was visiting that morning but as she didn't seem overduly concerned I thought nothing of it

after giving Alice her medication I noticed that she was running out of one of her tablets as the hospital had only given her a weeks supply so I nipped out to the chemist while Alice was still in bed for what I thought would be 10 minutes but it turned out to be longer as the doctors said that they had given the hospital's new medication prescription to the pharmacist but when I went there they couldn't find it in the mean time while I was out the district nurse called and was concerned that no one was answering the door at my flat so she phoned the care workers for the code for the key safe she then tried to open the door and the key snapped into two pieces so I had to call the joiner again as the estate manager was on holiday for a week and the relief manager wasn't in on that particular day

12 noon the joiner\plumber came to see me to ask if they could do the hot water storage unit in the afternoon they came back within the hour to start work and to my amazement had finished by 3pm

Alice seemed really out of sorts later in the day and was very agitated and wasn't eating or drinking properly and I once again became concerned that she had hardly passed any urine into her day bag so I phone the district nurses who came out at about 7-15 pm they took one look at her and advised me that she should go to hospital immediately and that they would dial 999 which they did at 7:30 however they was told that there was a high incidence of emergency's and that there would be a bit of a wait for the ambulance to arrive and they where right as it didn't turn up until after 10:00pm

when she arrived at hospital they put her on a drip as they said that she was very dry and took blood samples and a urine sample after a hour and half the drip had finished and they checked her catheter bag and it was still empty they then tried to flush the catheter out with water but where unsuccessful so they then said that the catheter was blocked and needed to be replaced and the nurse asked me if I would hold Alice,s leg while they replaced the catheter

doctor then came back with the bloods and urine which came back ok and Alice was formally discharged at 3:00am but that they couldn't order an ambulance until 6:00 am as it wasn't an emergency so Alice was placed in a bed on the A&E ward and I was allowed to sit in the chair but I couldn't sleep and I managed to get a couple of hours sleep before the ambulance men came to take Alice home at 10:30am

I feel that I have gone through hell and high water this week and have managed to pull through and I also feel that I have managed to go through a few learning curves this week and I feel all the stronger for it ;)

if you have managed to read right through to the end of this post I commend you for your patience

Jesus AIL, you've had it hard, and poor Alice! These systems are put in place supposedly to make life better for the patient and the carers, but in reality sometimes it can make things even more complicated. If only the different departments would work together.
