Upgrade carphonewarehouse or Vodafone?

I had a call from car phone warehouse as my upgrade is due and he wanted to know if Vodafone had been in contact and if they had to ignore them. I said that I was waiting until the iPhone 5 comes out. Do car phone warehouse or Vodafone offer the best upgrade deals?

I'd imagine carphone warehouse are able to be slightly more competitive, unless you're a really heavy user of your account, which only Vodafone are likely to know.

Mobiles.co.uk have some upgrade offers that you can sign up for online.

The fact that they told you to ignore Vodafone should have set alarm bells ringing. Why would they tell you to ignore your network?

Who you get the best upgrade deal from will depend on your usage amongst other things. I find it's cheaper to go to another network rather than upgrade.

I need to stay with Vodafone due to us all having friends and family, I was a little concerned at what he said.

Vodafone theoretically will offer you a better upgrade deal if you get through to their retentions department (say you want to leave) as opposed to their upgrades department.

When shopping for an upgrade in CPW they'll basically send a generic system message to vodafone asking if you're eligible for an upgrade and how much discount on a phone you're entitled too. They'll recieve a basic amount based on your usage and won't generally be able to haggle as much as they're a third party (You can haggle for accessories etc but not on the phone/contract terms as they're still dictated by Vodafone). However CPW do talk about a price promise (http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/price-promise) but I very much doubt it would still be able to match retention offers.

Word of caution though, unless you're a very high spender and a long term customer with them chances are you still will get a better deal on a new contract as/when the new iphone comes out than you will as an upgrade.

You get slightly better benefits buying via CPW if your buying android phones as they tend to be SIM free and will get updated earlier than waiting for the updates from the phone networks. You also tend to get free accessories with a little push. Not sure what benefit you would receive with iPhone's though. My last phone through CPW I got free in car charger, free sd card and a free screen protector and the price was £5 less per month than o2 offered me.
  • I had a similar experience on TMobile

Having bought the phone via CW they cold called me this week at upgrade time, their offers were pretty rubbish - or rather much the same as new customers can get from their website

My conclusion was that they were a bit cheeky cold calling me then offering me a poor deal

    Good luck
  • hi there i was in the same situation last week. cw rang and said you are due an upgrade so i said i had seen the new version of my phone that comes with a free galaxy tablet. he said it was for new customers only but would put it through as he was from head office and had the authority to do so.

24 hours later a new phone and tablet arrive and i just put my old sim in and off i went and got a pound reduction on my monthly bill as well!

look online to see what they are offering :)
  • shop around, i was due an upgrade with Carphonewarehouse but in the end upgraded with phones for u. a by far better deal. saved myself £££ per month!
