Be interested in opinions here.
For those that don't know I own and run my own business with 4 UK locations and 180 staff. I don't get involved in the day to day running of the sites just take a strategic view.
I do however speak to the senior managers to get a view across the company, most of this focuses areound sales etc, but there was a "HR issue" today.
I'll present this as fact.- An employee got a call at work to say their cat had been ran over.
- The manager on site let the employee go home to sort stuff.
- Employee rang back later and said cat was put down by vet
- Employee was very upset.
- Manager said take the rest of the week off (this was Weds) on full pay and come in Monday.
- Today a sick note received from employee citing "stress related disorder" with 2 weeks off work.
- Employee has rang in and spoke to manager and said can't face work, apologised for being off.
- Employee rang back later and asked for a phased return to work over 4 weeks.

I have not read the whole thread and don't particularly want to..
I think this whole thread is in p1ss poor taste OP. It implys that you think that the employee concerned is full of carp, and shows you to be unprofessional by touting it on here.
You, nor us, can possibly know how stressed your employee is.The opposite of what you know...is also true0 -
Actually, if you read the whole thread, you will find this is far from the case. The employer does seem to be a decent chap(ess) who wants to gather opinion on this is order to treat the employee fairly, and s/he has stressed that this is a valued and reliable employee!Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0

Sorry, but .........:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
I didn't need to read the entire thread to tell that it is just another 'let's jump on the bandwagon and justify our bitter and pitiful lives by laying down judgment on a complete stranger we know nothing whatsoever about' thread...and guess what, I was right!..
Where is the empathy, and compassion these days? Why do people come on this board to vent their frustrations in such ugly ways, it makes me wonder if their own relationships and lives are so unfullfilling that they are so pent up that they need to come on here and behave in horrible ways to each other. Here is a thought, maybe if most of you weren't so bitter and nasty to people, your own personal relationships may brighten up and become more fullfilling. Spend some time with your other half and enjoy each others company, spend some time with family and enjoy life and SMILE for we are only hear for a briefest of times - I pity that the most valuable thing you can do with your precious time, is to play one upmanship with strangers on the net.
I for one, am happy with my life and relationships so I can only offer you a hug in commiseration of the miserable time you are obviously having and sympathise with what Karma will serve up exactly what you are dishing out. Have fun, and much love. Feel free to reply, but I shan't respond xxxxThe opposite of what you know...is also true0 -

If my cat died, I would be upset, but bare needing time off maybe to sort arrangement with vet, I would be back at work the following day. She was a rescue cat who showed up at our door. I didn't like her for quite some time, but long story, we couldn't give her back. After some time, I got used to her and started to like her! I would miss her, but not desperately.
Our receptionist at my place of employment has some learning difficulties. He is in his 50s, never married or have children. His cat died recently and he was completely devastated. She was very much his baby, his companion, his best friend. I can totally respect that the loss of his cat was very different to what my loss will be, however dreadful it is to lose a pet. I think he only took a few days off, but he came back clearly quite depressed.
I think it is very difficult to judge the effect losing a pet has on individuals.0
