A middle-class couple who fear the financial crisis could lead to the meltdown of Western civilsation have sold their house and possessions to buy a yacht - which they are planning to sail to Greece.

So convinced are Naomi Smyth and Sam Rossiter that society as they know it could collapse in the wake of the Eurozone crisis, that they have decided to learn how to live as sparingly as possible - by visiting countries already affected by financial hardship.

    LOL

And, it's just PR for their filming venture....

Yes, come back with £100k, buy land and be self-sufficient.... precisely what sized postage stamp would that buy them in the Bristol area?

It's certainly not me. Firstly he's not my type .... and there's no way I'd go on a journey like that, in a cheap boat, having been on a couple of little courses. £1 says RNLI meet them at some point.

The whole thing was ludicrous (besides being an advert for their documentary).

I particularly liked the part about going over there to ask the Greeks what it's like to live without the Internet. Errrr. I think you'll find the Internet still works in Greece. Actually can't wait to see what the Greeks make of these idiots.
  • Modern day Hippies. The pair of them!

Disingenuous too, since they "...want to learn what it's like to live without the Internet.." and then they then want to earn a few bob by uploading videos to their own website!

Well here's two lessons they have probably learned already:

    1. Ryanair could probably have got them to Spain, Greece etc. a lot cheaper than sinking £500 into a smelly old boat plus a small fortune making it seaworthy. Quicker, too.

    2. When they get back in a year's time, their £100K savings will be worth around £103K if they are lucky. I'm sure they could buy their own house back for £110K. [Mind you, I'd rather live in my £500 tent rather than that nasty house pictured in the article.]

I guess the only thing they'll 'learn' from the Greeks is how easy it is for them to steal their boat and trash it on some remote Greek island.

yes, it sounds rather as if they believe that the greeks have regressed into the dark ages. they are going to be sorely disappointed as they are either going to find that (i) no they haven't, and things aren't really apocalyptic at all; or (ii) greece is indeed a post-apocalyptic wasteland, in which case the first people they come across will take all their stuff and probably kill them.
  • Thanks for all the criticisms guys. It took me ages to do that boat. :(
