The answer is no, you do not really need one.

They are quite neat, but I'm not sure I buy into the no local data thing, and the mobile broadband services and data allowances are something that I am very sceptical about.
  • I have an iPad too, its best function is the fact that I can change channels or set a recording on my Humax Foxsat, or watch a recording without having to go to the room where my foxsat is , mind you I can do that with my HTC Desire and or whichever PC I am using at the time.

iPads are good because they have the largest app development community - if you want want to mess around on and have fun then go for it if you can afford it.

If you were asking about the iPhone when you've already got a smartphone then I wouldn't recommend it. I've got an iPhone, and as a phone its crap - signal is always bad, so much that I walk around with a good old fashioned feature phone on PAYG as well for times when I really need to call.

Coming back to the iPad, it's not trying to be a phone or anything else but a fun tablet - so I'd definitely say yes, go for it.

You have incurred the wrath of the Appleoids. You know fine well the consequences of dissing the Tablet Made in Heaven.

What's the 'no local data thing'?

What's there to be sceptical about with the data packages offered by the comms providers? Why should they be any different from phone packages?

Someone said No, but Yes - it does.

(I know it wasn't a serious question, but to avoid confusion....)

Despite being skeptical about the iPad, it has become a laptop replacement for whenever I travel with work and is great for non work travelling.

Due to my job I also get all of the tablets, all bar the ipad gets used, currently in my deskdrawer, I have 2 samsung tablets, a blackberry playbook which is the worst tablet ever, a Hp one and a Wildfire they are all collecting dust bar from testing the odd android app on.

I mean that 16/32/64 GB is not a lot of space to store things on the device itself, and so you need a supporting infrastructure to hold it; this can either be (a) your own Wi-Fi enabled storage, or (b) cloud storage. Both of these cost more, have implications for security and availability, and have various other limitations (eg. could you watch a movie by streaming it from dropbox?).

In terms of scepticism about packages; for instance (i) 3 are offering an iPad SIM only deal with 10 GB allowance at £15 per month, whereas (ii) Orange's similar deal is for 1 GB peak + 1 GB off-peak. IMHO, Orange's doesn't include enough data, but 3's is hampered by poor reception (I have a 3 mobile internet dongle, and the reception is very "variable" to put it at its most charitable).
