There is a way around it. If the item is marked as gift/ for family you get like 24 quid tax free imports. I don't remember the exact numbers. Its how I import goods from Chiba tax free. Look it up0

You are probably just lucky that your items haven't been chosen to be presented for customs charges as I'm sure that HMCE are fully aware that many shipments are marked as gifts when this isn't really the case.
All they need to do is open them to check for invoices, receipts or other paperwork which show that the item is not a gift and you may be royally screwed.0 -

The gift allowance is £135 I believe but as said the item still can be checked.0 -

I have had items opened and been charged vat/ duty many times. DHL pay your rates for you in advance and then hit you after which I dont agree with. At least RM let you know how much you owe.
The gift idea is not something that I asked for suppliers to do. They do it automatically. The "best" one I have had to my door is "plastic samples for tesco" :S why on earth they wrote that I dont know haha0 -
Rule of thumb.....always add an extra 25% on to the cost of anything to cover import taxes and duty.
If you have to pay it, then youve already taken it into account.
If you dont, then its great to get the item a bit cheaper.0
