Another vote for the packing service. There are times when it is just not worth 'saving' money, and this is one of them.

Before we moved back to this house (using a packing service of course), we watched the move from hell happen across the road from us. They were doing a self move with a hired van going a short distance away.. All very well, got the first lot loaded up, then they had to wait for the keys to get access the new place. Off they went, back a bit later, to find the new folk with their professional removers on the doorstep wanting to move in. Of course there was a 4-bed house minus one smallish van load of stuff still in the house. In the end the removal people were unpacking the new people's stuff into the garage and were helping the old people load up the box van to try and get rid of them. I felt so sorry for the new people.

We always said if ever we moved again and completion was the same day for our old house and the new, we'd try and insist the people we were buying from got professional removers!

I agree that professional removers are a god-send when doing a large move - even though I still wouldn't trust them to pack for me (and it's not just my opinion - when we sold our 6 bed house in 2007 one of the couple buying was a former antiques dealer with a house in Belgravia and they said they never allowed professionals to pack their stuff :p) but seeing as that move took three days just to load the vans with our already packed boxes/furniture (and cost £4k+), goodness knows what we'd have to have paid them if they'd packed it too

When we moved again last year we did everything ourselves in a hire van - never again - it took seven (or was it eight?) journeys over a week (200 miles each way) in a 7.5 tonne Luton van plus a specialist co to remove our hot tub. Rather than saving loads of money as envisaged, it actually worked out almost as expensive - plus we nearly killed ourselves in the process :o
