Fraudulent phone call??

Wondered if anyone on here could help me please. Sorry if its in the wrong section please move if it is.
A few moments ago my Husband received a phone call on his mobile from an Australian accented chap on a witheld number. This bloke then went on to say his account with Barclays was £500 in debt, my husband didnt say anything on the phone other than yes, i dont think so before he hung up. A few seconds later phone rang again and he passed it to me to answer.
Bloke started ranting that he doesnt appreciate being hung up on and had quite an aggressive verbal conversation with me.
I tried to trip him up by stating that if he had authority to speak to a customer he would know the name of the person he wanted to speak to and more details of the account to be convinced it wasnt a dodgy call. More concerning was that if it was my husband they required they would not have been able to speak with myself without his verbal authority and they would have wanted to go through security questions first to be assured they had the right account holder. Also if he knew the account was connected to a male why was he talking to a female?
Since hanging up the phone my husband has told me the depth of the converstion he had, which entails the chap threatening to send a baliff round if not paid immediately and this is when he hung up.
He is currrently on the main phone to Barclays to see if they have any knowledge of this and have checked the account online and it is not overdrawn.
Should i be concerned that this may have been a dodgy call in which had one of us been daft enough to reel off account numbers and sort codes we could have found ourselves in trouble?

Sounds like it. Barclays would be able to tell you whether or not someone from their collections department had tried to call. But really, on a genuine call, they should try and identify the customer before continuing the conversation, they're not allowed to talk to a third party and they wouldn't start threatening the baliffs0

Thanks, just wanted to make sure i werent over reacting. I know these types of phone calls arent rare but the person on phone only gave his name, tried to tell me he knew who he was speaking to as it was a name on a sheet and got shirty when i asked him how he was sure he had the right person without asking further questions.:j Was married 2nd october 2009 to the most wonderful man possible:j

Pretty sure your telephone provider can get the number of these !!!!!!!s despite the fact that it may come up as withheld on your phone.
Send an email to your banks anti-fraud dept and give the details (phone provider, time of call etc) to them. Not that they'll do much with it of course.0 -
The calls have been made to my husband's mobile and call comes up unknown number. Police have said they no longer track numbers as its too costly and only option we have is to change number to stop it happening again.
Doubt provider will do anything more than change number but will see in the morning if we receive anything else this evening.:j Was married 2nd october 2009 to the most wonderful man possible:j

Say the following
"I require your name and your headset number. I also require you to record that I am making a formal complaint of misconduct against Barclays because you have harrassed me.
The Finanical Services Authority now requires Barclays to provide me with a written acknowledgement of the complaint and a copy of its Complaints Procedure.
Within 8 weeks from today it must provide me with a written response to my complaint and explain that, if I am not satisfied with that response, I may take the matter to the Financial Ombudsman Service free of charge. It must also provide me with a copy of the booklet 'Your Complaint and The Ombudsman'
I understand that the person nominated to deal with complaints against Barclays is Paul Maddox. Should I not hear from Barclays acknowledging the complaint within seven days from this conversation, I shall e-mail him, providing the date and time of this call and the number called. No doubt Barclays will be able to trace who made the call with this information."0 -

If they call again it might be easier just tell it to them straight that you know they are scammers and please go away. They won't bother wasting their time if they know the game is up.0 -
Im pretty sure its not Barclays, my husband rang them straight after the second call which i answered and they said they would not proceed a conversation without identifying themselves and the dept they work in correctly but have put a marker on his account now incase of unidentified transactions or any fraudulent attempts to remove money.magpiecottage wrote: »Say the following

It raised more alarm bells when approx 40 mins later the phone went again and my husband answered to the same accented man to be told 'you owe £500 and i F*****g want it, hand it over now W****r' to which point my husband laughed and said yeah right and hung up.:j Was married 2nd october 2009 to the most wonderful man possible:j
