I love your kitchen as it is, considering you've had it twelve years, it still looks up to the minute! I would just have lighter stuff in the back of the glass cupboards if you're concerned about the light. I think its lovely as it is - very classy.

Have to say,not only does it look better in the daytime but,it looks better as it is and the lining paper experiment,to me,shows that cream tiles would ruin it.

The best advise is to go with what YOU like as its you living there. I know our kitchen suits us well but my MIL preferred our old dark wooden one as it was more traditional.

I really like very bright and light colours in our house as although its not tiny by any means its hardly a mansion and while most rooms get a reasonable amount of sunlight the cream and white walls keep it light, airy and feeling bigger than it really is.

To me the black tiles just close the room in - yes the look is very nice and still contemporary but it could do with being in a bigger space or just on one or two walls (obviously you aren't going to remove half your kitchen I'm just saying).

If you want it brighter which given that you started this thread it seems that you do then changing the tiles and walls would go a very long way. Beyond that you really are looking at replacing doors or the whole kitchen which would seem like a shame as it all looks rather good still.

In the end do what you want as you live there!

A very 'now' kitchen - you made a great investment. The quality of light is always going to be poor with it facing the way it does. Some people make the mistake of using white to lighten things but with light quality like that it always looks grey. If it were my kitchen I would add plinth lighting as suggested previously, paint the bare walls with 'light and space' paint (but not white), look at changing the ceiling lighting for something warmer and leave everyhting else. It's beautiful. Oh I might replace the island top with something more reflective.

Not trendy enough to have an "island" that's my kitchen table! It isn made of the same fake granite stuff as the worksurfaces. A glass table may be an idea.

I still think it's the overhead light pelmet that's drawing most of the light away, get that sprayed cream or removed/replaced and I think it'd make a world of difference - I don't think the tiles are the main problem, you have a light worktop which deflects from the darkness of the tile.

I think it's a lovely kitchen but I would change the tiles if it were me. I might consider a matt tile as there are already so many shiny surfaces. Perhaps in a light grey to closely match the worktops.
