Bathroom - Cost and timescale

So - the new house needs a bathroom fairly soon. The onld one is tired, taps are tarnished, toilet has low pressure flush, shower on taps doesnt work (just blocked I think) and the Electric shower has a very small temperature range.
I need it all fitted as well - partly as Im not good at DIY, secondly because its our only bathroom/toilet (the latter will be fun with kids), and thirdly as Im working away and only home one weekend in 3 until after Christmas.
Sooooo. How long does it take professional fitter to put in a full bathroom - Bath, Sink, toilet, Elec Shower, Heated Towell rail, Light with shaver points (prefferably two but dont know if you can get them with 2), a mirror, full tyling and floor - and whats the likely cost.
For cost, were not after super flash. Want a corner toilet due the the room being small - and particularly thin. The sink could do with being a smaller slimline one as well - it only gets used for teeth cleaning really. The wife wants the taps on the bath in the corner or at the side - but I think the side loaded ones may be too big for the room - I like the corner loaded. The shower neeeds to be good as thats what we use the most (Bath is mainly for the kids and a relax once a week or so for the wife).

A week min, possibly 2, depends on amount of tiling, type of floor etc etc
This will be a little longer in your case as the plumber will have to keep your 1 bog at least temporarily working for the family each night
Several trades involved, you need to get quotes, simple as.
Your idea of small may be someone else's large.
I know you want an idea from here but it won't really impact what you actually pay. I diy so won't comment on cost, I'm always way below what folks have to pay.
I will give you 1 thing to think about tho', the same amount of labour and secondary materials will go into fitting a cheap bathroom as doing a quality 1, maybe even more, so don't cut to many quality corners unless you are prepared to spend the same labour cost again in a few years.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
Labour is labour I know. TBH, the bathroom is "tight" . The bath/sink/toilet JUST fit alont the end wall, and the bath is 1700mm long with a 1m airing cupboard at its head against the other wall. thats not big - maybe 2.7m long by 1.8m wide or so.
Its something we would have had done before we moved in, however the funds are comming from an inheritance, which hasnt come through yet
. the toilet issue asside - a week or two with no showering !!!! - that will kill the wife, and no baths for the kids !. I guess a wash in the kitchen is about it
I was hoping for 5 days (working week) at the most, and perferably 3 days.
Oh well. As for budget - I have no clue what to set aside, hence the question. Were looking at around £1200 cost for bath/toilet/sing/shower/towell rail from the likes of B&Q/Bathstore (yes I know I can get cheaper), but fitting costs????
Havent really looked at tiles/flooring yet as such, so dont know the materials cost. Fairly plain with a mosaic band possibly for the wall, and tyles probably for the floor rather than laminate.
TBH if It can be done all in for £4k or under Ill be relatively happy. Obviously the cheaper the better, but not at the cost of cutting corners.0 -
Mine took nearly two weeks full gutting everything of the walls and ceiling taking down, large bathroom and ceiling height of 2.4 metres.
I did have a thread somewhere here it is.......

Hiya,
We have had 2 bathrooms quoted by B&Q at the weekend. The main bathroom came out at £1700 that was for, bath, sink, toilet, glass shower screen, taps and shower, heated towel rail. They did not include the price for tiling or flooring. They also wanted £2500 to fit it!!! So if you are not fitting it yourself I would advise looking for a local bathroom fitter as they will be cheaper.
Also B&Q are having a 17% off sale over the bank holiday weekend if you are buying from them may be worth ordeing sooner?0 -
Our bathrrom for a nice sink, bath with posh silver feet, toilet, taps and towel heater came in at under £600 from B&Q in one of their "sales" and on a 15% off weekend. Keep your eyes peeled for them. The quality has been much better than I expected. Tiles were around £150 for the whole bathroom. Then a blind, carpet etc. all came in at under £1000. We did fit it ourselves and did the tiling ourselves so not sure on fitting fees.

Don't worry too much, it is apain, dont get me wrong, but what all fitters try and do is minimise the disruption what you might find is they rip out all the tile etc leaving all the current bathrom in place and the actual fitting of the 3 pce suite can be done in a day providing not too much pipework changing. The shower (electric) will be a bit more time consuming
I was hoping for 5 days (working week) at the most, and perferably 3 days. I'd say it could be done in a week if you do a lot of the easier jobs yourself (rip out wall and floor tiles) Id be looking at 1 day for clearing out 1-2 day removal and fit and 1-2 day tiling and a day to finish
Oh well. As for budget - I have no clue what to set aside, hence the question. Were looking at around £1200 cost for bath/toilet/sing/shower/towell rail from the likes of B&Q/Bathstore (yes I know I can get cheaper), but fitting costs???? As said the diy sheds are normally very expensive to fit however they do offer the full service so if it goes wrong you dont have to mess about as much chasing a one man band. Pricing wise, bathstore is expensive! B&Q probably not too expensive but theyre cheaper bathrooms arent necessarily v good quality, value for money yes but quality not soo much
Havent really looked at tiles/flooring yet as such, so dont know the materials cost. Fairly plain with a mosaic band possibly for the wall, and tyles probably for the floor rather than laminate. Obviously depends on the tiles your after but £5 - £15 psqm should you get you a standard ceramic tile the you have adhesive and grout on top. A tiler in my eyes is fairly expensive and would always diy but obviously if your no good at it, its not worth it!
TBH if It can be done all in for £4k or under Ill be relatively happy. Obviously the cheaper the better, but not at the cost of cutting corners. This seems perfectly feasible, i would say this is probably about average incl fitting costs (round here anyway) Obviously better quality stuff will be more expensive. And a good fitter is certainly worth paying for! You dont want to find out in 6 months, theyve not connected your shower waste properly and theres been a drip between floors and the only time you find out is when the ceiling starts sagging!

£1200 for the bits is a fair gauge, £4k fitted makes me cringe, but that's just me, it's probably ok all in.
I will repeat what I said earlier, it's the fact that inconvenience becomes an issue is what will push costs up.
Can't you farm the kids out/take a break for a week to run concurrently with this??
leave a mate/family member to house st the property during the day etc.
This will let the trade guys get on without closure issues every day.

No thats not small. Smaallest one I've done is bath, basin and loo in an area 1.6m x 1.6m.paulmapp8306 wrote: »Labour is labour I know. TBH, the bathroom is "tight" . It is illegal for a property to be inhabited without a working toilet. You must be left with a working loo at the end of every day even if that means just connecting to the soil stack and have a bucket of water to flush. Edit: Shower at a friends or at the local swimming pool if need be. Its not a ball buster.the toilet issue asside - a week or two with no showering !!!! - that will kill the wife, and no baths for the kids !. I guess a wash in the kitchen is about it
If its a complete strip out, replaster, boarding, plumbing, tiling walls and ceiling, electrics, decorating you are talking an average of 10 man-days work which will include elaving it as serviceable as possible at the enmd of the day and clean and tidy.I was hoping for 5 days (working week) at the most, and perferably 3 days.
£ 4 - 5k all in should see you right. Allow £5k for your budget then anything leftover is a bonus. Only allow £3 and it takes £4 and you'll be smarting.TBH if It can be done all in for £4k or under Ill be relatively happy. Obviously the cheaper the better, but not at the cost of cutting corners.

Yes proper planning is neededDon't worry too much, it is apain, dont get me wrong, but what all fitters try and do is minimise the disruption what you might find is they rip out all the tile etc leaving all the current bathrom in place and the actual fitting of the 3 pce suite can be done in a day providing not too much pipework changing. I really hate it when people try and save money by ripping out the tiles themselves. Inevitably they use a very large adjusting tool and a fist full of ignorance and all that happens is the substrate gets wrecked and has to be redone. Result is that it actually costs them more.I'd say it could be done in a week if you do a lot of the easier jobs yourself (rip out wall and floor tiles) Id be looking at 1 day for clearing out 1-2 day removal and fit and 1-2 day tiling and a day to finish
Buy the suite and tiles yourself. Get an indy to fit and provide the more general building materials required. As said the diy sheds are normally very expensive to fit however they do offer the full service so if it goes wrong you dont have to mess about as much chasing a one man band. Pricing wise, bathstore is expensive! B&Q probably not too expensive but theyre cheaper bathrooms arent necessarily v good quality, value for money yes but quality not soo much
Quite. DIY nearly always looks DIY too. Don't forget tiling is a finishing trade not a brute force and ignorance one.Obviously depends on the tiles your after but £5 - £15 psqm should you get you a standard ceramic tile the you have adhesive and grout on top. A tiler in my eyes is fairly expensive and would always diy but obviously if your no good at it, its not worth it!

If the total bill is £ 4k and its OK all in why does it make you cringe as well?cyclonebri1 wrote: »£4k fitted makes me cringe, but that's just me, it's probably ok all in.
