Thanks everyone. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who has experienced this kind of situation.
I'd like to point out that I'm in a carpeted house, not a flat and have no laminate flooring.
I'll post if there are any further developments :-)

Me too, I am in a carpeted house as well and my landlord paid £6000 to get the flat sound proofed and assessed by the council. I am just glad he hasn't bothered us now we called the police out on him, they told him if he harasses us anymore they would have to go down the ASBO route. So, I would definately record everything from now on.

    nope you're not alone.
Lived here in a terraced house for almost 16yrs and for the first 14yrs we barely heard the neighbours, One side we never hear and still dont, and the other side we'd occassionaly hear. Which consider she had four boys in there was great. Heard the occassional noise but was quite rare.
New neighbours moved in Jan 11 and life has been hell since.
We can hear them go up and down stair, hear them shut (slam) doors, hear him telling his kids off and we can even hear them talking. Heard none of this from previous neighbours.
He even had a faulty smoke alarm going off every 30 seconds for 6 mths. He denied it was his!!!!!!! I had to involve Housing officer, she agreed it was his, he refused to answer door, or the phone to her, and ignored severla letters. Not long after it was fixed he stopped me and said Ooooo it's fixed.... I'm like !!!!!!??? you said it wasn't yours when I mentioned it before?

the noise got unbearable early this yr, we tried knocking to discuss politely the noise etc. He refused to answer door.
All came to head last week when they had rellies staying noise was unbearable. (13 people instead of normal 3) So i knocked on door and told them in no uncertain terms to shut up ( didn't swear tho) This makes me disrespecful for banging on his door.
We've reported this to Housing officer and they will offically warn him

he started another row with a another neighbour at wk end. Police also now involved as with each row he's trying tho not suceeding to provoke both us an neighbours into physically fighting with him and he threatened to kill my husband.

So you have my sympathies as neighbours can be hellish sometimes

Oh my goodness!!! I hope it gets sorted really soon. What a nightmare!!
  • I've lived under a family who had a toddler. It was like living under a hippo farm.

OP - Could you and your neighbour keep diaries for a couple of weeks and then get together to compare notes? If the noises they're hearing are routinely occurring when you are not at home maybe they'll see it's not all from your side?

Hope this situation gets resolved soon

Leonard: How can you walk around with no money?
Penny: I'm cute, I get by.

Things have reached new heights of ridiculous this morning. The lady next door was actually banging on the wall because we were walking down our stairs!!!!
This must be classed as harassment now? What can I do about that??

    Thanks in advance.

We live in a ground floor 2 bed flat, the couple upstairs live in a flat the exact same layout as us, they have 2 young kids who run around so much you would think they lived in a tardis and the inside of the flat was huge! We can hear the kids laughing, playing and screaming, BUT I would never complain about this, you cannot expect toddlers to sit down and be silent all day, you can't expect toddlers to not play, or scream and cry when they hurt themselves, you cannot expect toddlers to lay in bed till 10 or 11 in the morning!

Families with young children live where they can afford to live, I'm sure if they had the chance, or money, they would all live in detached houses where no one could hear their children playing or running around letting off steam.

I'm sure all those people with no children, or the sort of children who have been taught to be seen and not heard, would love to live in streets or flats where no kids exist but that will never happen, and maybe a little tolerance and understanding that kids do make a noise would help a great deal, unfortunately you cannot dictate what sort of flooring people have in their homes and if they want wooden floors to make their homes look nice then they should be allowed to do so without the fear of the ceiling downstairs getting banged on or their doors getting banged on with a barrage of abuse from their neighbour.
not all on benefits are scroungers and don't need to be bullied!

I had the same, it got to the point that me and my partner were literally just talking and we would get banging. Write it ALL down and get your council involved and ask them to inform you what police department you need to contact as well. The hardest thing to do is NOT to react to it, that is what they want.

If it was me I'd simply bang the wall back the same amount of times. Had a neighbour like that once and it worked with him.
    It's someone else's fault.

I can sympathise with this so much, we live next door to a lady and her 3 grown up children - within 24 hrs of us moving in she knocked to say us closing the kitchen doors was causing her daughter a disturbance. Daughter turns out to be 18 not going to school or work and watches TV all night. I know this as i can hear the TV.

When my children were in the bath playing and there toys were knocking the wall - she'd hammer the wall. I'd cook and she'd hammer, walk up the stairs she'd be off. I was walking on egg shells constantly shouting at my boys to be quiet. I had a letter from the council saying that if we didnt keep it down then i'd be fined and i'd get and ASBO.

That was the final straw, i phoned the council and asked them what noises they'd heard as surely they would need proof to send such a threatening letter - they had none. But they did come out and measure the noise - it was deemed as normal living noise. Eventually we had to go to mediation - all has been quiet since. But she has started on the other side now, and i have helped the other neighbor write letters and having the community warden out. I firmly believe she wants the council to re house her but they won't unless she kicks up a stink

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate all the kind replies. I really don't know what to do except move. I know that with more of a back bone I could fight and win this one, but I'm not sure I'm up for the battle. This morning we did bang back and nothing else was said about it, but I feel sick just being at home and that's not right! I hate having to uproot my children again, but what else can I do?
