  • Stick to your guns, at the time you probably wernt thinking about those details and were told they would be sufficient. Isn't it in their hands to get the cheque details from you? Account number, sort code, cheque number, date on cheque, payee etc?

I can't imagine why they wouldn't have asked for the cheque number. Their explanation doesn't make a lot of sense TBH. If you couldn't specify the cheque number, they should have cancelled ALL the cheques you had which hadn't yet been cleared, and given you a new cheque book IMHO.

If they say they 'cant place a stop without a chque number' then why take the instruction from you and not inform you of that?

Also worth remembering (if u can) what if any disclaimer they quoted on the call for stopping the cheque.

Im sure under the Data Protection Act (just incase you can't remember) you can ask for a transcript or a recording of the call no?

p.s. if it were me, I would call, ask to be put through to a British call centre, then ask for 'somewhere high up to write a letter to'
Nothing's free.....but we'll see what we can do!
  • Sometimes not all calls are recorded, just a certain percentage, if any.

Bit late...but a result nevertheless.....they probably read what everyone has written here....
Managed to recover some of the money myself(not through the bank) after alot of hassle and now the bank have realised that they were in the wrong and want the person's details and the amount I want recovered.....think they are going to contact the person themselves...do they actually do that?
Urgh, think I should charge them for the hassle I've had to go through and days off work, anyhoo...end result has come from the help of yourselves...and writing to them time and again, so Many Thanks to you all...
