So upset with HSBC. DIDN'T cancel my cheque

I am livid with HSBC, I cancelled a cheque (for £500) on the 14th April 2005 via a phone conversation, I found out today that they actually didn't cancel it and put it through ion the (17th), even though they have a record of the conversation!
The guy at the call centre (obviously not in the UK), started to get sarcastic and said they would investigate and on top of that they did charge me a cancellation fee!! What should I do? Am too upset to think straight, should I follow this up with a letter demanding my money back yesterday? Or get them to at least pay back the money and the cancellation fee?!)
Please Help....

I'd get a letter off to them pretty sharpish.

Correspondance for complaints are usually handled by trained staff in the UK and they will be able to sort it out for you and listen to the calls again.

Once its all sorted ditch and switch to a better bank with custoemr service skills and decent rates on their products.

You've come to the right place.

Might be a good idea to be very careful using cheques in your cheque book until you resolve this. Assuming their computer systems are designed right, you would think thats its impossible for a bank employee to cancel a cheque number which has already been presented for payment. So, I suppose that begs the question... if they didnt stop the cheque you asked them too, which remaining cheque in your chequebook DID they stop? (if any!)

Maybe call them up and ask if there are any stops on any cheques remaining in your chequebook first.

That's an astute observation, newfoundglory. Chances are very high that a stop has been placed on the wrong chq.

Get a 'formal complaint' in ASAP, I dont have the address to hand at present, but its on the website as well I believe (or just e-mail them from the website, still goes to the same team in the glass tower in London). Compalints are generally handled quickly and very well.

As you've been told, most calls are recorded, generally takes about 8-9 working days to get a call listened to, if an error was made, the money should be refunded relatively quickly.

    Os` ;)

Thanks all, the result so far, they will not admit fault anf have refused to give back the money, reason being that even though they were told the name of the person it was written out to, the date on the cheque, they have said that the serial number of the cheque was not given in the conversation....yeah another complaint letter has been sent....am waiting....still...
