I know that the credit rating requirements varies from bank to bank but would you credit rating need to be good to get a debit card?

I would assume that my credit rating would have to be very good for me to get a credit card/ loan but am i correct in assuming that if ur credit rating is not that good then u can still get a debit card?

I think it varies from bank to bank. I have a basic account with RBS and I have a debit card with that, so I assume that NatWest would have the same facilities. My credit score isn't great but it is also not terrible - I think it is about average.

Most banks will let you open a current account as long as you don't have a history of bad debt including defaults DB etc.

Knock An application into lloyds or Barclays.

Yes they do but if you have bad credit they will give you a blue debit card (full auth) instead of a purple one.

They don't do the Step account any more but you can get Select, Select Silver and Advantage Gold on bad credit - they just operate it a bit like a Step account.

Not saying that's untrue, however I have 7 defaults and one CCJ (all around 3/4 years old)

I have a select silver account and a first reserve, they did do a Credit Check, I'm sure my application was processed through AVU, however I opened it in branch and it was open within ten minutes. However I understand from reading a few posts that NatWest are known to open an account and provide you with sort-code and the account number, only for you to receive a letter three days later stating that the account has been closed.

Yes but your current account is nothing more then a basic account as you won't get loan offers nor credit card offers nor OD's increases
    etc.
    Your probably blocked for everything.

Actually I went into NatWest beginning of the month, and I spoke to my bank manager who looked at my profile and told me that after 6 months of banking with them they would be willing to offer me a credit card, and he is aware of the situation re: credit file.

Yes they say that to everyone it's complete boll*ks as they get a monthly feedback from each of the CRA's and with defaults etc they won't offer you no credit facilities while they are On your file.

If it's any help, I'm in an IVA but have a Select account with NatWest. No credit facilities though - but I do have a VISA Debit card.

    Best wishes.

I thank you for your input, I'm not that bothered about a credit card from them anyway, and I sufficient funds in there without the need of an overdraft. I did not even state that I wanted any credit facilities. I didn't even go in there to ask about a credit card.

What I was told by the branch manager is that after 6 months they build up a credit profile by looking at how well you have managed the account, I understand that defaults and CCJs may cause them to decline an application, nevertheless; they can see from looking at the account history that I have a considerable amount of money being placed into the account and I have never come close to being overdrawn and never had a direct debit returned, As with all credit applications, your past payment history would affect their decision to lend as a responsible lender.

if your opinions aren't helpful, please keep them to yourself.

You've been sucked in by the bank believing they will give someone with a CCJ and defaults A credit card just because you paying good money into the bank.

Lloyds natwest Barclays HSBC all have certain markers they put on their accounts to high risk customers.

You could put 5k through their bank each month if you wanted to but it wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference to the marker on your files as the monthly feeds from the CRA's will keep showing your CCJ & defaults.

So my opinion was helpful and very true
