More insulation is it worth it

I had insulation done last year under some Government scheme.
On Saturday someone came round and said 50mm is not enough under a new scheme you can have 250mm
for £70 is it worth it?

Apparently 50mm is not enough, but I'm surprised you had 50mm done last year. Are you sure? I would check by going into the loft. Did you pay for the insulation? I have ~100mm which was done many years ago.

If you had it done last year on a govt scheme they should have put 250mm at least in so check what is there, and if its not at least 250mm get them back to fix it! There are a few companies taking advantage of these schemes to get paid without doing the work especially as often people don't check their loft afterwards to make sure its been done.

If it was done last year then you should have *at least* 250mm.

Go up and check if it was done, or get someone else to go up if you cant.

£70 is quite cheap but check with your council if there are any free deals going in your area

    Yep - check with council.

My local one currently fits 250mm free if there is less than 100mm already fitted. If there is more than 100mm but less than 250mm its £100 to top up.

If it was fitted last year under a gov scheme, it should have been 250mm - if not it does not comply with the scheme and the company should not have been paid (by the gov). Complain top the original installers, and get them back - or report them to the council if they refuse.

50mm is the standard from about 20 years ago. Either the first company didn't do the work to the required saving (and did enough to make you think it was OK), or the second company haven't measured and are trying to sign you up for work you don't need.

P.S. 270 mm is the standard, not 250 mm. http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/In-your-home/Roofs-floors-walls-and-windows/Roof-and-loft-insulation

Or the first company went up in the loft, saw there was insulation already down and just left it without checking its depth.

    And yes - 270mm not 250. DOH.

I've topped up the insulation twice during the last 3yrs just 'cos while it was on offer at B&q it couldn't do any harm.

  • Is there any benefit to going over 250mm? I have that amount already but would consider buying extra when on offer if it would be worthwhile.
