Our old back boiler is suffering from explosive ignition so got a quote for switching to a combi.

Quote is from an accredited Worcester Bosch installer so comes with a 7 year warranty.

Run new gas pipe from metre to new boiler location, install WB Greenstar 30Si boiler with digistat. Flush system, fit extra double panel convector rad in main bedroom, fit trv's to 9 rads, install towel rad in bathroom, price £2000. Location is Newcastle. Quite surprised at how low the quote is......

EDIT: just had a second quote tonight for the same job, £3076 inc VAT

Sounds like a good price to me for quite a bit of work.
I take it the installer is supplying all the goods?
When they say Flush the system, ask if that is a chemical flush or full system powerflush? I think you will find its only the chemical one.

He did mention a powerflush, as he was on about how much BG charge for it, but since having another plumber around yesterday he told me exactly what he does, a chemical clean, and said if you get anyone else out who says they'll powerflush the system ask them how long it'll take. And yes, that price includes parts.
  • I'd be worried that is too much work for that amount of money

Make sure they are gas safe registered and don't pay upfront.

I've added a second quote I recieved tonight to the first post.

Both these guys came via the Worscester Bosch "find an installer" tool on the WB website. Both of their gas safe details check out too.

Thanks for the headsup mate, I've just received my quote from him.
    £2500.

    WB 30CDi
Full system change from back boiler to new combi.
Installing boiler in a unused room upstairs.
7 New Rad (All to requested spec)
Movement fo a couple of rads.
    WB Wireless Stat
    Powerflush (if needed)
    All TRVs and Drainoff lockshields

    Standard 3 Bed Semi affair

Seemed like a canny guy too, even came round at night to have a look at what needed done and provided quote within 48 hours.

WB accredited to Extra 2 year warranty, previous quote was £3800 but that guy was insisting on fully replumbing entire house with a lot of expensive copper piping.
  • if it's a really old system is the heating a one pipe system ? if it is then yes it will req a re-pipe to make it a two pipe system, a powerflush if req ? a flush (wether manual or powerflush) IS REQ on all boiler changes because if your system is dirty if WB come out to do a repair on the water side ie heat exchanger then the warranty isn't worth the paper it's written on.

Its currently a 2 pipe all copper system AFAIK
He said he would test what comes out and see if a chemical clean would do or if a powerflush was needed, price includes whichever.

If it's a two pipe system then I can't really work out why one guy would want to repipe it, you can check if it's a one pipe system by looking at the pipes feeding the rads if both ends come off of the same pipe either under the floor or down the wall then it's a one pipe system & will req repiping. A chemical flush or a powerflush is basically the same thing you use chemicals in both it's just a powerflush is done using a machine & a man flush is just letting the existing system circulate the chemicals for a period of time.
