bank refusing to reimburse credit card fraud

i was burgled & also work for the bank, & was actually on the job then (before everything was hiked out to a cental dept) that dealt with fraud - i had to see all my chqs come in with a signature that was nothing like mine, sent back to the shops who then replied that 'the signature was a good likeness & they took it in good faith' knowing that the banks would pay up, the sig was NOTHING like mine & before chip & pin i would always pull till operators up if they didn't check my signature, petrol stations were the worst
I feel safer using chip & pin - also the number of people I serve in a week who come in with cards unsigned is unbelievable, also the best one is the lady who works in law enforcement who writes her pin on the signature strip because she can't remeber it - its 4 numbers for Gods sake - you can manage to remember your phone number - & most of the youngsters can rattle of their 11 digit mobile number without a problem!0 -
You could always just write 4 random digits on the sig strip like
PIN:4215
So when its nicked this is tried forwards and backwards and with any luck a third time and then kept by the machine.
I have this on all my cards, maybe the police officer you are refering to does too.
I suppose 5 digits would be better, make people 'have another go'0 -
hi,
man, am I fuming. My mum (67yrs, grey, totally trusts the whole world, leaves her front door open etc) got her bag pinched in a shoe shop.
She was in the police station giving her report while her credit cards were being used all over the city. The banks (smile and saga) are refusing to give her 500 pounds back saying she should 'shield' her pin from view and the responsibility is hers.
I am double mad as I sent her to smile in the first place..
HELP?

Chip ands Pin
Introduced by the banks 'cos they wanted it. Excuse to make fraud more difficult than signature. The banks charged the retailers loads of money for the equipment. And now we read the stuff above +
TX Maxx gets hacked in January 2007 but has only just told us?? Advice check all your credit card usage at TK Max since December 2002. (and who remembers every time they have been into TX Max since then?)
And today (although actually it has been going on for ages) hundreds of people have found their credit cards cloned at garages all over the UK. What security against those who work at garages on minimum wage and with up to 70% staff turnover.
And increasingly they don't want cheques ('cos it costs to much to process)
and the banks combined gross profit this announced earlier this year was?
How many more consumer watchdog programmes, how many more investigations by OFT?
And what is the bottom line advice - you consumer must be more careful with your usage of our cards...I they wonder whi increasingly people don't trust the banks!!0 -
Hello, i can not see this being a problem. As long as she did not authorise the payments she is not responsible. Her handbag was stolen, she doesnt know how they got her pin, and with todays technology many criminals can access all sorts of information from a card. I think you just need to contact the right people such as the CAB or some other organisation who will handle the case for her.0
