    aarrgghh....looks like my optimism was misplaced, it's been stuck on file 110614 of 348xxx for over an hour now :mad: ....

    OK, looks like I found the problem...the hdd is failing. Chkdsk was running for around 12 hrs, had repaired lots of bad sectors, but hung for around 4 hrs on one file. On a restart it won't recognise the drive but hiren's does, so unless a fixmbr does the trick it looks like a new hdd is required :(

    I suspected that when I suggested chkdsk. At least you've solved it now. ;)

    I hate it when they go like that, teasing you they're going to be fixable and then the rate of death speeds up :( Safe to say attempting to sort the boot record out was unsuccessful, so will have to tell them the bad news.....not doing anything else with it 'coz it's still readable, and there's about 200GB of data to try and recover off it....

    Well, the data recovery is underway, 3 of 4 users done with some loss of data but not too much, so far lost about 0.75 GB of 38 GB-ish, the 4th one is the biggie, with 120 GB to try and salvage :eek:
