must admit this is the second time I've had this one, thought I'd cured it first time round with some major software conflicts going on. Thinking the cleanboot method is going to be the way to go to get to the offending article......my money's on corrupt software or driver causing it now I know I haven't overlooked anything in the DDS and CF logs :(

Hanx mate :) I do now though have a plan of action (thanks to waddler prodding my addled brain). I'd overlooked using cleanboot (got overzealous on the malware route), but that method has helped on previous occasions so I think that will be the initial way to go when I get me mitts on it again :)

right, getting seriously f***d off with this one now.......

ProcExplorer shows nothing of any interest, aswmbr and tdss killer come back clean, and running a cleanboot gave no improvement

The only useful thing was a startup repair was on about cameras, music players and phones that may need the drivers uninstalling and re-installing...very interesting as there were 2 failed attempts at a samsung driver update earlier in the summer, which may coincide with the onset of this issue....I just don't have access to the device to try it......any other ideas apart from manually finding the drivers and getting shut ???

It's taking an age to do anything in normal boot, safe mode is fine.
That certainly points to it being something loading in normal mode over safe mode. Strange that troubleshooting from a cleanboot didn't help narrow it down?

    chkdsk /r ?

About 200GB of data so clean install needs to be avoided if poss.
I'm always loathe to reinstall if I can help it, but time is money....

when I cleanbooted it it was almost safe mode :(

chkdsk I did try, but because of the way it's not behaving, didn't know if it had hung (as a symptom) or because it was working on something....have set it off again and will see what happens this time.....

hmmm....looks like I was a bit premature last time....chkdsk is still running, and has made some fixes in the windows/fonts area so far..we'll see what happens when it's completed...
