Hi just got some asda scottish oats 56p for 500grams - 100% oats nothing else.
They taste delicious but im confused about the calories.
Am on a diet so hope someone can help me? Can someone please explain how many calories would be in the below:
1/2 cup of 100% of rolled oats
1 cup water
1/2 cup skimmed milk
I cook it on the pan for 5 mins and it turns into a very very large bowl as if for 2 people is this right?!
The packet says 160 calories in 40 grams of oats but does this mean uncooked or cooked?? Im only interested in what the cooked product is!!
Am i getting the measurements wrong? Should I be eating 40 grams of COOKED oats as opposed to getting 40 grams of dry oats then cooking it?? If so how many dry oats make 40grams of cooked?!
Please help im so confused! thanks
ps - 1/2 cup of dry oats is 40 grams right?
my scales have bust

I think the 160 calories will be the raw oats. You need to add the calories for the milk - and for any sugar, if you are a heathen and take it in porridge.0

blimey i must have been eating a serious amount of calories :-(
I dont add sugar or anything just water & half cup of skimmed milk.
How do I find out how much 40 grams of COOKED porridge is then? Even 40grams cooked with water & i can just add calories for milk.
Hope a healthy person can help me!!0 -

The 40 Grams of Just Porridge oats cooked with only water would be around 150 Calories. If you then add milk then obviously those are added calories (35 per 100ml).0 -

You weigh the oats dry. The calories given on the packet will be for the dry oats. Weigh out 40g of oats and measure out your milk, then just add those calories together and that's how many calories the cooked product will have. For example, if you had 40g oats + 250ml milk + 150ml water it would have the same amount of calories as just the 40g oats + 250ml milk, but the first would weigh more when prepared. So you need to measure dry, it would be much more awkward to make it and then weigh it afterwards!Kate.0 -
OP, Weigh what oats you want, then to work out the calories, take the calories per 100g (Probably about 350kcals) and multiply by how many 100 grams you have.
So 40g would be 0.4 (because 40g = 0.4 of 100g)
350 x 0.4g = 140kcals.
Then you have to separatly work out how many calories the milk and anything else your adding has.
So if you having milk, work out how much milk. For arguements sake maybe say your having 125mls of semi-skimmed. Milk has 49kcals per 100mls so 125mls would mean your having 61.25kcals. If you add in nuts, seeds, sugar...etc you'd need to add in calories for these by working them out after weighing or measuring them, eg just 1 tsp of sugar would work out to be around 20-35kcals (but weigh your average tsp first).
Add the different parts together, in the example above oats and milk and sugar and this will give your calories. 140 + 61.25 + 30 = 231.25
So you can then taper this to suit. If you want to cut back on calories think about what would be better for you to cut, it could be the sugar or the milk-or type of milk (eg skimmed rather then semi) or just the volume and this would cut calories from your overall total.0 -

I have been on a low carb diet for a couple of years and have lost 2 stone and my weight is now stable. I eat porridge for breakfast every day (Flannigans as I find it to be less stodgy than the supermarket brands). It fills me up all morning and I don't have any need for snacks. Porridge is good for you. I treat myself at the weekend and have dark brown sugar with it. During the week I sometimes mix it with mixed seeds.
I also have goats milk which is better on my digestive system.

Make it with water, and then add 75grams of frozen berries. Only about an extra 28 cals and makes it really nice.
Also; if going water only soak the oats overnight in the water it makes the porridge far creamier.I'm so boring, my clothes wanna keep someone else warm, someone cooler0
