My husband wants to upgrade his waterproof gear before the autumn. Does anyone have any recommendations on where to buy good quality items that will last?
I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off :o

I'd avoid Hein Gerike - we've been in legal dispute with them for nearly a year over waterproofs that are far from waterproof. (And helpfully they're now in administration )

Ebay! Just got to find someone who bought all the gear, got scared and now wants rid. I got myself a Richa jacket and gloves for £30 off there at the start of the year and I don't think they'd ever been worn.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

Lidl often have very reasonably priced motorcycle gear. Sign up for their e mail special offer updates and they will tell you when they are available in your local store.

If you want quality gear, look for goretex label, unfortunately you will not find that in Lidl.

    I found Berghaus jacket http://www.amazon.co.uk/Berghaus-Rg1-Jacket-Black-Medium/dp/B001E64DG6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1345368962&sr=8-1

    and trousers http://www.amazon.co.uk/Berghaus-Mens-Deluge-Waterproof-Overtrousers/dp/B001E5YKCY/ref=sr_1_1?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1345369039&sr=1-1

    works for me.

The issue we're having is with a goretex set (£600 worth!!!)

The body of the clothing is fine, but the zips aren't goretex, and the flaps that cover them aren't designed well enough to keep water out. So the jacket, sold as waterproof, isn't waterproof. Also the way it zips to the trousers means its not waterproof there either.

Yeah eh has used Hein Gericke before, the zips on his new boots broke after a few weeks use. Can't imagine why they have gone into administration now. He put ring pulls on them, despite me nagging for him to take them back.

He commutes for 120 miles five days a week, so it must work! Aside from anything else I can't put up with him moaning because he is soaked to the skin when he gets home :rotfl:

He did get a tank bag in Lidl though, and he got five years' worth of use out of it before it needed replacing.

Hein Gericke have indeed gone bust, currently having a fire sale.

J & S stock a vast range, if there's a shop near you then he can see them and try them on before he buys.

I have the Oxford waterproof over suit, it's slightly padded, but fits nicely over my armoured jacket, and it's also hi-viz. Think it was £50.

Not had chance to use it to test it yet as the wheels are currently off the road, but I did get it from Ghostbikes in Preston and they were doing an offer on Oxford stuff

    It looks like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BRFL-OXFORD-FLURO-REFLECTIVE-BONE-DRY-RAIN-OVER-SUIT-LARGE-WATERPROOF-BONEDRY-/350545681728?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Clothing&hash=item519e269d40

Actually Hein Gericke stuff is pretty good, if you buy the higher end stufff, such as the Voyager or Tricky gear.
I ride about 20,000 miles per annum and for the last 2 years have had a Tricky suit and for 6 years prior a Voyager suit, neither of them let in a drop and I live in South West Scotland which isn't excatly a desert.
I have no choice but to ride in inclement weather, its part of my job.
Of course some people will have problems as with any company no customer base will be entirely happy.
With bike gear if you don't lay out some cash you will get wet, unless you get lucky on ebay etc.

With the OPs problem with the zip, I've not encountered that, does he ride a head down/ !!!! up pocket rocket?

There are many equivalents, but I prefer Goretex which is a quality product made in the UK.

Goretex is a brand name for the fabric, they do not make zips. Experienced bikers will avoid garments with zips for wet weather riding. Even fully taped seams & waterproof zips will leak under arduos conditions.

Hien Gericke do not make garments. They sold a wide range of products. Some good and some not so good quality. Price point is not a reliable guide to quality.
