jackieo the problem is that many people cannot cut back any further. How many people are already going without milk and meals so the kids don't have to, using basic shampoo and repairing their CS clothes? Too many. It can all seem really rather pointless and hopeless when you think about it too much.
Popperwell lots of people are looking for rooms these days so you could find someone very nice and quiet. I have considered renting a room in a family house recently and some of them are living in cloud cuckoo land when it comes to the rent- £700 a month and you're not allowed to be seen in communal areas or in the house during daytime and can only cook when the kids are in bed. So basically a troll hiding in the spare room at night? Imagine if you ever bumped into the kids :rotfl:Living cheap in central London :rotfl:0 -
I sometimes wonder what do we do with all the time saved from instant food or tiime saving gadgets, I don't see many folk with their feet up enjoying their 'time saved' at all.
Looks to me as if a lot of folk use the time to go shopping and buy even more pointless stuff.
So........ a few weeks ago I said I had been inspired by this thread to buy stuff for the local foodbank. Funny when I was buying it, I was really trying to get more bang for my bucks. It is still sitting in the car. I know where it is supposed to be but can't find it, have rung and rung but no answer and no reply to message I left. Phoned main number, they didn't know when it was open. I'll be taking it to the collection point in the PO in the town where I work - very affluent area but obviously they have a need for it. Bit annoyed about the whole thing to be honest - what if I was trying to get some food from them.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0

All the above Adelight...if I can manage I will but on the other hand someone told me today the HA do allow you take in lodgers which may mean I can stay put and they probably help choose who lodges, don't know how it affects HA, CT and may take some getting used to but it would help reduce the BT that's coming...At least I am not like Rigsby of Rising Damp.:rotfl:"A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. What really bothers me is the roll back in ASDA, you know you've been buying cottage cheese at 49p for a year, then one day you go in and it says "Roll Back, was £1.29, now 69p" - when was it £1.29? for five minutes in the night while you restocked the shelves before you made it 20p more than it was this morning?"There is no substitute for time."
Competition wins:

I could certainly manage to live without any of this, and in fact I do, though the wellies may come in useful, but I've managed without for years so I certainly won't be rushing off to Aldi. I agree that the supermarkets push some products that are "unnecessary", but no one "needs" or "has" to buy them, just because they are there, and are cheaper than elsewhere. It's only a bargain if you really need it and will actually use it.0 -
Hi JackieO.
Here's my (highy personal) list of non-essentials in no particular order: wipes of any kind, fabric conditioner, plug-in or any other kind of room fragrancer, bath additives, make up, celebrity-endorsed tosh of any variety, magazines, designer anything, collectibles, cut flowers and pot plants, pre-packed things you can easily do yourself like sandwiches, pasta salads etc. Extra quilted bog roll, paper hankies, bottled mineral water, cola, snack foods in fiddly little packs, lunchables................
I could go on but ot gets boring. A lot of stuff in the supermarket and elsewhere has only appeared since affluence became more the norm than the exception and will predictably reduce or even vanish when the reverse happens.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Ah........ Now Grey Queen I always carry baby wipes in the car and a small pack in my handbag. DH uses them for cleaning his hands when he has been working on the car and wiping the dashboard, they also get biro off of a leather settee, spot clean carpets etc I use the ones in my bag for when I go shopping for if I pick up something sticky, or a bloody piece of meat and they are invaluable for a quick freshen up on a hot day.Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

See, there's always an exception to the rule.
I don't have a car or an OH so no need there, have never put biro on this leather sofa or it's precessor, haven't got any carpets and just splash water on my (unmade up) face. Never had to pick up a bloody piece of meat when there wasn't soap and water at hand so no need for that.............
You won't easily part me from my microfibre clothes. I took a clean one and moistened it to wipe dust of my lampshades, rinses and cleaned the windows, damp wiped the sills outside and then chucked in the wash again.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

I agree. Microfibre clothes are a godsend. Saves a fortune on cleaning fluids.0 -

I don't need the bin, the same with the BP machine though my BP is monitored and I take BP tablets...I wasn't actually thinking of myself when I posted about the specials, just saw them so mentioned them in passing...
However I don't have any wellies and have been looking for some so they may be might be good for winter...they are stronger than some."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson
