Trying to leave Talk Talk

Hello

I have TT for broadband and phone and havent had many problems with them apart from their nuisance sales call, always wanting me to change to the essentials package and find their internet slow at times.

Orange phoned the other day and promised me a new super duper router that would make the experience much better....so I agree to move to them.

However, received a phone call today telling me that Talk Talk wouldnt release my telephone number.

I dont want to change if I cant have the same number, so this has all been put on hold for the time being.

Firstly can somone advise if TT can actually do this?

Ive been advised by Orange to phone TT and ask them to release it.

Does anyone know if there is a way around this please?

My telephone number was previously my parents at this property and I dont want to loose it.

Any advice appreciated - thanking you in advance.

Pollyhen

I recently left TT after a series of customer service and performance issues and kept the number that I'd had since the days when British Telecom was the only choice (Not long after it was the GPO!).
I had line rental, anytime calls and 8M (Joke) broadband which I originally signed up with Tiscali. When TT took Tiscali over the problems started and I moved the entire package to Plusnet, it costs slightly more but broadband performance is hugely better and I've never needed to test the customer service.
I should have added that I didn't ask TT to release the number, it was all handled by Plusnet without problems.

It's nothing to do with releasing your number. You are presumably on TT LLU line and it's not possible to go from one LLU service direct to another-you neeed to do a return to donor back to BT, first, which is free, but requires a 12m line rental contact.
How do you think that merely changing your router is going to improve your broadband service?

Orange use BT lines - they don't offer LLU anymore. Ergo migrating to Orange IS going back to a BT (well BT reseller) line. ;)

OP - Did you take this number with you to TT, or did they give you this number? (i.e. were your parents already with TT?) If the latter then it may be a TT number and not transferable. If the former then someone is telling you porkie pies.

Are you sure you cant switch from one LLU to another this article says you can

If you’re switching from LLU back to non-LLU ADSL, your new connection will use a completely different technology, so you will have to be manually returned to the BT network before your new connection can be set-up. There could be an extra charge for this.

Even if you want to switch from one LLU provider to another, you’ll still be restricted to those companies currently supplying broadband from your local exchange.

macman is right, a router alone is not going to make any difference, however for me moving away from talk talk made a huge difference because TT's overseas customer service blamed my performance issues on me and basically refused to do anything. Funny how without me doing anything my connection speed increased 6 fold the day plusnet took over my line.
