I know, we've had this breed before and have not seen anything quite like this behaviour. If I give him a treat and take it away, he's fine (I do make him do tricks for them) - it seems to be the rawhide only that he has issues with.

What about if you give him something tasty and take the rawhide off him, does he still growl? Is he trained to 'drop' ?

No, he drops the rawhide until he's finished the treat which I used as my opportunity to whip it away ;) He is trained to drop, but evidently it doesnt apply to rawhide :p

From now on dogs are fed separately and get treats etc separately. It's not fair on either dog to be stressed out from each other.

I would tackle the possessive issue around you by asking him to exchange rawhide for something nice like ham/cheese (whatever he loves!) and build up a trusting relationship so he knows he will always get it back once you take it away.

Alongside this I would keep both dogs separate when given rawhide, don't let either near the other until at least 30 mins after they've finished so they've forgotten about it.

I don't think you need to ban it but if you manage it this way (one in crate, one in separate room for example) then they can still have it but under your control.

Sorry...I disagree with this. this dog is aggressive to its owners around raw hides and until this is addressed then they should not be given.

You want to limit the amount of uncontrolled situations this dog gets into, not encourage it

Not necessarily, if he is left alone there should be no issue. Other dog, owners keep away until he has definitely finished it.

As I understand it he only growls when someone comes near him to take it off him.

He needs to be trained to give up the rawhide chew when asked without any possessiveness. Owner and other dog should not have to keep away from him when he has a chew nor should the dog growl & go for the owner if she tries to take it away from him. Therefore rawhide should not be given until the problem is addressed.

I had a possessive dog when I was young but it wasn't just a certain thing he was possessive with, it was everything. He slept in my parents room and if my dad got up to go to the toilet through the night, he couldnt get back into the bedroom nevermind the bed. If my mam had left her slippers or bag on the stairs, he would sit there and guard it, no one could walk past or touch it or he'd attack. The only person who could pick up anything without him attacking was my mam. We can look back and laugh at it all now but at the time it wasn't funny however we still loved him :)

When we went to collect him at 8 weeks old, we were not allowed to see the parents so I believe the problem was genetic and they too were possessive and vicious.

How long have you had your dog? Have you had him since a pup? Has he always been possessive over rawhide or just recently?

I've had him since he was 10 weeks old. Up until a year ago he wasn't bothered about rawhide and didn't touch it. Now its like an obsession but its not ALL the time. He has access to rawhide all the time, but he tends to only take a fancy to it after my female has half chewed it down (yuck!) then nicks it off her, and she takes the one he doesn't want. He eats hers and then takes back his original one. Weird or what?

my friends had a very possessive CKCS , turned out he had that issue they can be prone to where the brain is too big for the skull.

It started with possessive behaviour, then a stroke, and it worsened from there. I am not saying there is anything wrong with yours, but a trip to the vet certainly won't hurt.

and all mine wants to do is hump my leg. Noone elses but mine. She soon gets the message when she gets shoved off though. Not only is she not species specific, shes obviously not gender specific either. Have you ever tried crossing a road with a dog wrapped round your leg? Its embaressing to say the least! She does it mainly when someone gets 'too close' to me.:o
