Postage Stamp Disappeared?

OK. So I went to my local Post Office and had a packet to send 2nd class to the UK. He weighed the packet and told me it was £2.20. He printed out a stamp for £2.20 which he gave to me, and I put it on the packet making sure it was stuck on OK. I was then given a receipt which I put the address on and then handed the packet with the stamp back to the man at the Post Office.
Just had an angry email off the buyer saying I had stupidly not put the postage on and that they had been to the Post Office and were told to pay £2.51 which they refused, and that I should send them another item with the correct postage.
Also, slightly strange since I posted it yesterday 2nd class and the buyer went to pick it up from the Post Office today?
What do I do now? I have the proof of postage in front of me and I do not have another item to send? Do I just go ahead and give them a full refund? Can someone shed some light on this? I am totally confused now.

Perhaps they are mistaken and the item they went to collect is not yours.
It does seem too fast to be your item if it was only posted yesterday. For thousands of people this Christmas, their must-have gift is far more vital than the latest gadget or toy – it’s blood. Please don’t let the festivities and cold weather prevent you from giving them the ultimate gift… give blood.0 -

£2.51 to pay would not be your packet , in fact it makes no sense at all as it means £1.51 underpaid and a £1 handling fee- and I can't see how the postage of £1.51 has been arrived at.
Be tactful, ask them to check that it is your item as yours has a label from the PO and the undercharge suggests this is a parcel of a completely different weight. You could also mention that it is unlikely that the parcel was yours as it was sent late yesterday 2nd class.
Hmm, still trying to work out an underpayment of £1.51....I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Ha! Have worked out the underpayment.
It is something sent as a large letter at 69p when it should have been a packet at £2.20. The difference is £1,51 plus £1 handling, so tell buyer it is definitely not yours as your postal receipt shows a charge of £2.20 and maybe they are expecting something smaller from another source- even a freebie or junk mail.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Stamps do come off. But if they do, then the recipient has to pay the postage plus an admin charge. The admin charge (iirc) is £1. So something for £2.51 will mean the original postage was £1.51 - I don't know any class of RM packet/letter or large letter that would equate to that.
If it is your item then you can claim from Royal Mail with the help of your receipt and the buyers evidence of payment.
Perhaps let the buyer know this and get them to email you a copy of the payment charge. If it is your item, you can refund, if it isn't then they can chase up the correct seller.
Edit - Well done Soo!!0 -
OMG. Thanks girls and boys. I got myself in a right tizz just then. I thought the handling fee was £1, so if it was my item, it should have been £3.20.
I messaged the buyer and she is adamant she has not purchased anything in the recent past. But she will wait until next week and see if it turns up.
Thanks guys x x0 -

I use Royal Mail Tracked and those labels are huge and very sticky. But, they have come off. It's not so much the label, more what it's stuck to and rubbed against!0 -
My latest line of items go in a jiffy bag with paper outer and the sheets of stamps I buy often work loose- which is very annoying. They just don't seem as sticky as the old fashioned lick them yourself sort.
However, It does not look like falling off labels is an issue here, it's probably junk mail from someone or something the buyer has completely forgotten they are expecting from another source.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. £1.51 sounds like a part postage underpaid item.
So they underpaid rather than no postage.
Underpaid items are charged at the 2nd class rate
Your item was sent 2nd class so would be charged at £2.20 as the basic 2nd class packet rate.
given you had 1 postage label its either on on or not vs losing some stamps0 -
Buyer brought something off me at 10pm - Complained 6pmish next day that I should 'get my act together' as they have had a card through that said they had to pay for postage of an item...
Hellloooo obvouisly its not my item as I'd posted it that morning..
Seems buyer had not ordered anything except my item so without thinking just sent me a really nasty message....
Really does not sound like this is your item although 2nd class post can get thier next day it would still of charged £3.20...the only other option if parcel was weighed wrong in first place but it still would not make figures right.People don't know what they want until you show them.0
