Cosco try in on

Checked the prices for tyres at Costco. I was a little surprised to be told

"We will have to replace all four tyres sir"

"I only need two"

"You will have to bring it in for us to check, if the other two have less than 6 MM we will have to change all four"

"Why?"

"It's new health and safety rules"

I left, wondering how many motorists they have ripped off?

6mm? Thousands of miles left in them! Ridiculous.

I am not kidding and he was not laughing when he told me. I have e mailed Cosco meberservices@costco.co.uk and shall advise if and when I get a response.
Would you care to explain if this is company policy or just one "enterprising" assistant trying to increase his sales.

There used to be some advice (and I can't remember how many mm) that if you have a puncture and need to replace a tyre on either axle, the tread depth should be checked on the other tyre on the same axle to ensure stability, grip etc but not all four.

If this is indeed a health & safety rule, it's one they've made up. There's no legal requirement to have matching tread depths. It may be a recommendation or even required on certain cars (thinking back to the 1990s, the Cavalier 4x4 had this recommendation!), but otherwise, I think you've done the right thing by letting head office know.

New tyres only have 7-8mm of tread, so changing at 6 or below is ludicrous and totally uneccessary imo.

be interesting to see what they come back to you with...

As I understood the Costco offer.

You had to buy four tyres, but they would be fitted as and when required.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

I've never had that experience at costco.

Unless the car is one with a sensitive 4 wheel drive system then the costco person is bonkers.

Michelin do the costco training. I can't see them agreeing with this 6mm daftness.

Sounds like complete rubbish to me, and !!!!!! has health and safety regulation got to do with it?

Are the two tyres that actually need replacing on the same axle?

Yes, two tyres that need replacing on the same axle.

I replace tyres long before legal limit. I will not be using Costco.

I was going to use Costco once and wanted two new tyres. It was 'policy' that the would rotate the other two wheels front to back or vice versa, can't remember what way round it was.

I said I didn't want them swapped and it wasn't an option.

I went along to Kwik Fit and they agreed to price match and do what I wanted done to the car.
