Changing broadband supplier/email address

It would probably benefit me to shift my broadband supplier from Virgin to elsewhere but the only thing to hold me back is having to change my email address and all the trouble in advising contacts that goes with it.
A friend now informs me that anybody can take their existing email address with them whoever they shift provider to but i can find no evidence anywhere to support the advice.
Am i advised correctly?

Virgin media will cancel your email address when you leave,this may be up to 90 days later so you need to set up a new email and transfer your contacts first.
Suggest gmail,hotmail, or gmx.com
You cannot take an email address to a new provider as the original owners may well block access to servers.

As Steve says if you have an address like GMail which is independent of the internet provider, you can take that with you.

You should set up a GMail address and inform your contacts now and then in future no matter how many times you change provider you can keep the GMail address

Gail, as above. What 'trouble'? A group bcc email to all your address book contacts, and then log in to your online accounts to change the email address. maybe an hours work? Once you've done it, your email is ISP-independent forever.
