Help with disability benefits

A disabled adult claiming Working Tax Credits can also get the disability element.
You can get extra for a disabled child if receiving Child Tax Credits.
You can't get the WTC disability element with CTCs.0 -

I'm lost, don't see why op is claiming if his wife is more likely to get in the support group given she's on HRM DLA..
Are you claiming as a couple ???I always take the moral high ground, it's lovely up here...0 -
I believe the OP is saying that his wife gets Severe Disability allowance.
See here:
http://www.dwp.gov.uk/healthcare-professional/benefits-and-services/severe-disablement-allowance/
She will be eventually transferred over to ESA so in the meantime the OP is claiming ESA and his wife's SDA is being taken into account.
Presumably they have taken the couple rate and then deducted the SDA that his wife already gets.
Not familiar with this scenario but it would be, I suppose, similar to a person claiming Incapacity Benefit and their partner claiming income based ESA.
Mmmmm... think the OP might need CAB or a welfare benefits advisor to check if the figures are correct.0 -
I get esa income based on work related activity group, My wife claims sda.0

Your wife's SDA will be taken in full when they work out your ESA.

I get it now but why aren't they claiming as a couple ??
I didn't think it was allowed to have separate claims, for example a couple don't have separate jsa claims they claim as a couple, that's whats confusing me..I always take the moral high ground, it's lovely up here...0 -

I must admit the more I think about it the more confused I am.
I would agree that usually they would be making a joint claim for ESA. However I am not sure what happens when one is on a benefit that hasn't yet been transferred to ESA.
Really do think the OP should visit CAB for some advice.0 -
The ESA is being claimed as a couple, the SDA only by the wife, you can only make one claim for an income based benefit, so this always has to be claimed as a couple, but the SDA is a contribution based benefit, so can be claimed by an individual.Ellejmorgan wrote: »I get it now but why aren't they claiming as a couple ??

It's exactly the same for JSA, if they were both on contribution based JSA they could both have a claim, if it was income based they would have a joint claim.0 -
