job centre CRB check?

Hi,

Im currently claiming JSA after losing my previous job as an assistant manager of a bar. While I was working on the bar I passed a course for a personal licence, but I need to get a CRB check before I get the Licence.

Any ideas if the job centre would pay for this as getting a personal licence would help in my job search for another bar management position?

    Why not ask the JC.

I didnt think individual persons could apply for a CRB as it had to go through the employer.

If it is a CRB then yes - it has to go through the employer. But I have never heard of having CRB checks for bar staff! I am not even sure an employer could do one!

OP - are you sure you don't mean something else? There are police checks some employers require which are effectively just data record requests (individuals can do these). And there are various types of security checks which employers can do. But I am pretty sure that CRB's are not available to employers in your field.

    Basic Disclosure Criminal Record Check

The Basic Disclosure criminal record check is the level required for individuals applying for a Personal Alcohol Licence. It can be obtained both individually or by a company on their staff. This check searches for all convictions considered unspent and takes between 1 – 2 weeks to complete

(googled crb check for personal licenece)

Sorry to disappoint but JC will only pay for enhanced disclosure checks and only then in certain circumstances.

Its not for a barstaff position its for a personal licence to sell alcohol, which is standard for management in a bar to hold, it is also required to be able to hold a premises licence.

Ah that explains it - it isn't a government required CRB (there is no basic disclosure for these - it was never introduced). These "CRB's" are provided by private firms and are not a legal requirement. They are in fact an expensive version of the subject access request which any individual can do over the desk at their local police station. I can't see the JobCentre springing the cash for one of these. As far as I am aware, I don't think they'll even pay for "real" CRB checks (because some employers charge people for the costs of these).

Thanks Sues, I was expecting that to be the case. Ive not been going to the job centre long but I've already worked out that they refuse to do anything to actually HELP people find work. Ive been going for the 6 past weeks and have never been asked for any sort of proof that I have been looking for work and only today have they asked to see a CV.
  • A print out from the Police National Computer, which you can get by making a subject access request under the DPA, is also acceptable when you submit a personal licence application. This should be cheaper and faster than getting your basic crb from disclosure scotland.

The only caveat to doing a PNC printout is that it will contain a lot more information than a basic CRB will. Information that wouldn't show up on a basic CRB, and that doesn't relate to convictions for relevant offences under the Licensing Act won't be taken into consideration when making the decision about whether or not to grant your licence, but the people processing your application will see the information (which you might prefer people not to see).
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

All they can do is look for jobs on direct.gov which is what you can do yourself, they aren't qualified careers advisors.
