the ones with balconies have Sky,

So you are saying there are already dishes on the property?

Are any of these near you? You could speak to the owner and see if they are prepared to add more feeds to their LNB they do 8 way ones.

You could offer to pay for this upgrade and feed the cable to your flat?

Is there space for 17 "hidden" dishes on the roof for every one? how would the property look with 17 flats having Sky+ cabled from the roof?

That's a silly question, since one dish, with a Quattro LNB connected to a multiswitch, can feed dozens of apartments.

Lilly, if you have a SE facing window, a dish indoors just might collect enough signal to provide viewing. It depends on the window glass and other obstructions but, if it looks promising, borrow an old Digibox and dish to try.

Also, you might be able to receive Freeview TV with an aerial mounted indoors. The so-called "indoor aerials" may not be any use but a "Vision Focus" log-periodic might work.

Apparently the director lives in the building and is adamantly against satellite dishes being installed on the building.

I don't quite understand...if you funded the communal dish option, it could be put out of sight and the existing dishes (which are visible from the street) could be removed...Surely everyone's a winner?

Have you explained it to them in these terms?

Its absolutly not a silly question, the OP was not discussing everyone's flats she was solely focused on her own issues and at no point mentioned that she had 100% resident agreement to a new communal system

I was merely pointing out the effects of every one having this same view point, as can be seen by the state of pretty much every London block.

If you also read the OPs post further you will see she already has a communal TV aerial and has no need for an internal.

However well done slipping in your SEO term ;)

Sorry, but you have no "legal" right to a dish or cable. It is down to whoever owns the building and if he's already said no there's nothing you can do.

If it was that important you should have made 100% sure before completing that you could get the TV service you wanted.

Your other option is Freeview and top up TV. You can get Freeview HD and recorders now.

perhaps naively, when we asked the seller if there was satellite or cable, he said yes there is cable, and we had no reason not to believe him. Stupidly we didn't confirm this, but it wouldn't have been a deal breaker anyway as location and school catchment areas came first.

We have been with Sky for many years and love it, we are obviously upset that we possibly have to cancel our subscription, and have to resort to Freeview - which the last time I used it, was awful and had terrible reception.

It's just upsetting that after renting for years in London with no problem at all with satellite and cable, now we are first time buyers and putting all our money into a lovely flat that doesn't give us this option. It's obviously home comforts and what we are used to - but I wanted to check legally if there was anything we could do, as I've heard about an EU Law about satellite dishes, and when I google it, lots of pages about this come up.

We have emailed the management company in a very nice manner (hopefully so as not to !!!! our new neighbours off!), and are awaiting their reply.

Thanks for everyone who posted helpful replies on this topic.

Have you contacted the cable company I would have thought that if there is cable in the flats although your flat doesn’t have it now they might be able to provide it.

How does the cable come into the property?...By that I mean are the some grey boxes on the outside wall somewhere, possibly below the flats that have cable?..
If so,then it's a relativly simple task to either connect to one of the existing cable installs & running a spur line off that to your property. As for going thru the other flats to get to your's, utter tosh. They can take the cable around the outside of the property, either at low level or buried around to your side.
And actually Gordon isn't entirely correct in saying you can't have cable, the fact that the other apartments have cable & satalite points to the being an existing wayleave agreement in place.

Thank you - we're awaiting their reply as we have requested to feed either cable or sky off one of the flats that have it.

Thanks Spike - when we talked to Virgin they said they'd have to feed it through the flats, but I will bring this point up with them. It's silly if some flats get cable and satellite and some nothing, I don't think it's fair. I'm not sure about grey boxes yet as we've yet to move in and inspect everything, but I'll look out for them.

Cross fingers!! I can't be fiddling about with Freeview!

    You're looking for a box a bit like this;

    http://www.mediacables.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=13_25&products_id=45&zenid=ca485319a76c70a74c4501070bc21109

Those are the new type. The only time they have to feed cable thru the flats is if they are pre-wired,in which case the cable is already in place & covered in ducting, this is often found outside the front door at ceiling level (normally if the front door is internal) personally tho,the guy you spoke to at VM is talking out of his rear end..I'd ask for an on site pre-install survey.
