Moneyineptitude - I can only speak from experience, and I did say bad weather (I'm in NI so when I say bad weather I do mean BAD!) but another factor is the length of the coax cable to the dish, I'm stuck with it being quite far away and that weakens the signal too. I'm not trying to sell Virgin, but just made a general point that the weather doesn't affect cable like it does Freeview and (worse) satellite.

If it's a "regular" occurrence then your dish may have become misaligned.
Not, by itself, a reason to change to Virgin of course!;)

Each provider has it's own merits.

Do remember that cable can suffer from outages as well. I remember losing all services for some days when a workman cut through the main link from the headend.

Not necisarily. One of the other main causes of Sky picture problems is where the cabling runs over the roof.It rubs against the roof peak & that in turn cuts into the cable.
This allows water to ingress into the cable & run down to the LNB & the Sky box.
Part of the reasons a min 4 inch drip loop is essential.
This water then does two things,it shorts out the box/LNB & it corrodes away the stinger core in the cable.
