Time limit for editing posts.

Can we not have a time limit on how long posters get to edit the posts they make. Seen a couple of threads just ruined buy the OP deleting the first post.

I can see both sides of the coin on this one.

    For

There used to be a prolific poster who would start threads in 'The Arms' asking for help and advice. After several replies, the OP would edit his original post and none of the helpful subsequent posts would make sense.:p I started quoting his original post (before he'd edited it;)) and gave my response to his quote.

    Against

Newbie members may post personal information in error but once alerted by another member posting in their thread, they can go back and edit the OP to remove the relevant words.

Also, there are cases where the OP wants to update everyone on progress. For example, a thread with the sad news about the terminal illness of a member..........can be updated in the OP with the completion of each 'Bucket List' task.

This is just my point of view;)............I feel that the editing of OP's in some circumstances can be irritating but on the whole it is a beneficial thing to allow editing with no time limit.

It wouldn't be something that I'd be in favour of as I maintain the Comping Guide in the Competitions Time Forum & I'm often having to edit my posts to update or add new information to the Guide. The part of the Guide that I need to edit consists of the first 8 posts of that thread, which I started on 4th July 2008.

I can totally see where you are coming from though. If I'm replying to a particular part of a post then I often quote it, but if it is a thread I'm reading & haven't participated in yet, then an edited post can sometimes cause my brow to furrow wondering what has been edited :o

I'm with Nile on the conclusion, can be frustrating but definitely a good thing in my opinion that there is no time limit on being able to edit your own posts. :)
Sad because you don't know what to do? Comping question? Take a look in the Comping Guide to find out

    Hi DCFC79,

I've seen this happen on occasion and I agree it is frustrating, however the points outlined in this thread by Nile and VelvetGlove do, I think, accurately concur with my view that it would do more harm than good for the majority of users.

I think for now it's something we won't change, but I'll keep a note of what you've said in case we come across a different solution.
