    True - but that was for £1M .

    If it's for lesser sums like a few ££ or even a few hundred £££ then actually enforcing the giving back from a reluctant recipient can 'cost' rather more than the sum at stake.

    How do you withdraw £1m ? Surely even the act of asking will raise red flags, before you even get to the 'running off abroad' part. "Hi, I'd like to withdraw £1m please, 75% of which in £50 notes and the remainder in £20 notes, non-sequential, unmarked envelopes. Actually, thinking about it, please use this briefcase.".

    Just to throw something into the equation... As well as the ending 2 check digits, I believe the 1st digit of an account number also indicates the type of account (With LTSB anyway) e.g. current or savings etc...
