Stupid mistakes but jsut need to know now

Now I have made several stupid mistakes so please atm i do not need to get told that i made them. I am fully aware :(

I was a uni student and I had a student credit card from barclays

I had a limit of 750. While i was at uni I paid money when I could.
I had difficulties to pay and over the phone (i am sure this is what happened) I got my card closed.

I then left uni due to several problems. I could not find a job after i left and went to live with my parents in Doha. My parents work there.

Now when i was there I was under sever depression and totally forgot about my credit card. This went on for close to 15 months or so until i remembered. I then called barclays to get to know how much I owe but they no longer have ANY history of me ever having a credit card!?

I have called them up several times and every time I get the same response! They all say that if i ever had a card it got cancelled and is no longer in the system! Infact they were very confused as to why I was asking this question.

According to them i do not have any bills to pay them. I have called barclays atleast 10 times and get the same answer everytime.

Now does this mean that somehow my credit card bills was written off?! As far as I know I did have some loan to pay off!

Thanks for the help!

They will have sold the debt on to a debt collecting firm.

with the time scales you've given its more than likely that the debt has been sold on to a debt collection agency.

Best advice, if the debt collection agency haven't contacted you (re. above posts, which are most likely correct) is to contact your local Citizens' Advice Bureau (or see here - http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/england/debt_e.htm for free, impartial, help - see if you can make an appointment with a debt advisor at your local branch and take with you everything that you have in terms of paperwork relating to the debt). There is the smallest, SLIGHTEST, chance that the bank/debt-collectors have decided that for the sake of £750 (a vast sum for you and I, but relatively small-fry to an institution such as Barclays) the debt is not worth the expense of pursuing - but do not assume this until you have any such confirmation IN WRITING.

    That said:-

Please don't worry. You have done the RIGHT THING in facing up to this, which is a brave step in itself. It would have been much worse if you had let this go on for decades before dealing with it.

Depression is a terrible thing, even without debts on top of everything. And, though it might not seem like it for you at the moment, it WILL be all right. Honestly. Be truthful - with Barclays, any debt collector that may have taken on the amount owed, and with anyone from whom you seek help and you won't go far wrong.

You won't always feel this wretched. Everyone makes mistakes - if we did not, we wouldn't be human; we'd be deities - and the fact that you are being responsible and dealing with your credit card situation speaks very highly of you as a person.

Forgive me if this sounds patronising - that isn't my intention. It's just that I've been in this (mostly) same situation and I know exactly how you are feeling.

Take the help that is on offer out there, through the CAB or elsewhere (none of those places where they charge you for advice or "loan consolidation" though - stay away from them), just treat this as a valuable lesson learned. You will be OK. Seriously.

PM me if you need any support, OK? (probably not tonight though, as I'm just off to bed! :o ).

But please, in the meantime, use the sensible advice here and elsewhere and don't beat yourself up over this. You're not the only one to have stumbled at this hurdle.

    All the best,

    R xx

Ty for all of your advice!

One thing I did not mention is that I also had a student bank account which allowed me to have an overdraft of 1500. 2 months back my account was at -1500 and when i called barclays my account was still open and had no problems. I was just asked to pay the 1500 when I can.

The question I have is that if my credit card was given to debt collectors would barclays not just also sell the this student loan as well. I mean if they do not think i will pay off my credit card what makes them think that I will pay off my student debit card?

In the last 15 months i have incurred NO charges on that debit card. This is what is confusing me :S

get hold of your credit files.

and look at your bank statements

it may be that barclays 'paid' off the credit card from your bank OD

have a detailed look and see.
