Vet's Bill JSA and selling your stuff

Hi, I have just received a £125 Vet's Bill. I have thirty days to pay.

I'm on JSA and don't have the spare cash to pay it, unless I sell something I own.

Can I sell (either Ebay or a Car Boot Sale) some of my stuff (my old but good condition clothes, handbags, bric a brac and old toys, etc) without it being docked?

I would really appreciate any advice,
Thanks

  • Yes you can, as long as it is your old stuff and not stuff you have bought to resell at a profit.

Nope, just mine, the hubby's and the kids old toys. Do I have to declare it? (I'm happy to if you're meant to).

It's such a shame that you may have to do this .

A for the bill it will have to take as long as it takes for you to pay it . Perhaps you could come to an arrangement with the vet .

Next time your pet needs to see someone take it to take it to an RSPCA center where they will just ask for a donation .

My vet has a poster up about getting your bills paid by the PDSA. I'm not sure how it works but it might be worth investigating.

there is a PDSA scheme for people on benefits.

the first you register with your local vet surgery who has PDSA affiliation you need housing benefit or council tax benefit, you register your pet which is about £5 and then the PDSA will cover the vet bills for that pet if they are sick or injured for a fixed amount of time a year I think.
  • After having a family dog with muscular dystrophy and realising how much vets bills could run to even just for regular checks/meds, I have definitely come to the conclusion that it should be as compulsory for people to take out insurance for pets as it is to have insurance for your car! You shouldn't have to worry about taking your pet to the vets any more than you would worry about taking your child to the doctor.

Pets become as much a part of the family as any human. Personally, I think if a pet owner can't afford insurance, they can't afford the pet. It's essential.

I'm happy to pay it, we're havng a sort out now, seeing what we can sell. It was more the JSA side I was concerned about, we've only been signing on around a month and I didn't want to get in to trouble if I had a car boot sale. We've just booked in to one for this Sunday so will hopefully be able to go to the vets on Monday with something to pay him :-)

    Thanks for the advice :-)

I disagree. I can afford the vets bills so I don't need insurance. It's cheaper to save the money that you would have paid on insurance and just pay the bills yourself.

Just spoke to the vet, he's been great! He gave me some info on pet insurance and we're going to get that sorted too. :-)

    Thanks :-)
