Just out of curiosity to the microwave users this way. Could you for instance cook a roast or a stew in the microwave? I'm not having a go, I'm genuinely interested. If I eventually get away for a few days this year,I'll probably batch cook before I go so the dd won't starve while I'm away, or the DS for that matter :) He can cook eggy bread and that's about it :)

Microwaves are great at anything which requires long slow heat, set to the right power it is ideal for Stews, and makes burning harder!
The lack of burning does mean that stuff will not brown, so you can't rely on a little bit of browning happening with the partially stuck layer on the bottom like you may normally.
So, brown some of the stuff in a pan first.

It will not work at all well for roasts, unless it is a combi, which also has a conventional oven/grill.

i have 'mild aspergers' i am considered 'odd' by everyone that knows me, i really dont care. if you dont like me, then stay away....
i know it isnt that simple for others.

the whole system pits one disabled group agaimst another.

'my disability is worse than yours'!

we will always be sytronger when we stand together ....

i may not understand your disability but i accept it .....
  • It can be really difficult for those that enjoy good health to appreciate the problems that the less fortunate have. I used to prepare every single item of our meals from scratch, and enjoyed doing it.

Though we still enjoy fresh food, I have to pay silly prices, so that it is ready peeled, or sliced or whatever, as I cannot use a knife, with my arthritis problems in my right hand and arm, and I can no longer trust my DH to do this, as he has Alzheimers, and can get very frustrated if he can't perform a task easily - far too dangerous for him to have a knife.

It is the preparation that is difficult for so many people, and even opening a bag of frozen peas can be nigh impossible if you cannot manipulate a pair of scissors. Alas, there are always going to be the folk who exploit DLA, which is why so many cut backs are now taking place.

Overpayments due to fraud by claimants of DLA is repeatedly by the DWP measured as similar to overpayments due to official error, and both are under a percent.

Just because the government have spun it that the reforms are due to fraud to the newspapers, who have gleefully run with it for the sake of a headline, doesn't make it true.

The cuts are nothing to do with fraud. The DWP estimates DLA fraud at 0.5% but plan cuts of 20%. PIP will be more difficult to get than DLA because the rules for getting it are different.

Thnx Roger, I really have no clue. I cook the way I was taught to cook by my old mam, and it's the way I've tried to teach the kids. The dd was getting there before her flare up, the lad has no interest.

Microwave cookers like ours has a facility to obviously cook using microwaves, but it has an upper grill for browning and is also a traditional convection oven.

All at the touch of a switch. You just tell it what you want it to cook and how heavy it is - joint, chicken etc then the thing does it automatically for you.

In addition we have a 'slow cooker' - another easy to use gadget for stews etc.

For every thing that you come up against, there is generally always an alternative way of doing it.

That's great, but... I can't see my dd doing it. She's not the best of cooks at the best of times. She found herself eating more ready meals due to her disability and income at the time I started cooking for her. Hence putting on some weight and making her condition worse iykwim. Could be great for family use, but living alone, I can't see her going to that effort in all honesty.

But then, why would she need to as long as I'm daft enough to cook for her every night :/
