I think my dog is love sick

My two Yorkie boys have a girlfriend (Shih tzu) a few doors up which I dog sit two full days per week. They don't see her every day but I do ccasionaly bring her down our house for an hour a couple of days per week so they can all play chase or catchy kiss ;) as I have a huge garden.

They havent seen her for 4 days and Marley spent most of yesterday afternoon just whinging, running out in garden looking up the street and barking/crying then running back in and crying. I thought he must be missing Poppy, so I asked him where Poppy was and he got so excited.

Well today Poppy passed our fence on her walk. My two would usually bark and chase dogs around the fence but this time it was an excited bark mixed with a cry. I then noticed they ran past the front window so I knew they had somehow manged to jump the side fence (which separates the back and front garden) - something they have never done. They both ran straight to Poppy all excited. I put them back in the garden and they done the same again (little monkeys can jump so high) so I have spent the aftenoon nailing planks of wood to heighten the fence.

Marley has whinged on again for most of the aftenoon and soon as I ask if it's Poppy he's missing he gets all excited. I think he is love sick! It's funny because when I have Poppy here she really picks on him, she is trying to be boss I think. She jumps up at him, pulls his fur and manages to pin him down play fighting - he is so soft so doesnt dare move then when she chases after him he seems terrified yet he is missing her. It is only Charlie that loves the chase, Marley just kind of tags along barking and soon as Poppy chases him, he runs. They are so funny to watch.

I'm just wondering if maybe she is coming in to heat and these can sense it although they don't hump her, it is always the other way around which I think is odd (possibly domineering behaviour). She is 6 months old which is around the age they have their first heat. Or maybe he has just fallen in love and missing his girlfriend too much :rotfl:

unlikely. she is most probably/definitely coming into heat, keep them (all 3) away if they aren't neutered.

My two aren't neutered but they are never out of my sight even for a second when they are all together. I just say her name in a conversation and Marley gets so excited. As said they never try to hump her its always the other way around - never known a !!!!! do that so does seem it could be domineering behaviour as she is trying to be boss.

Hormones/ heat, they can probably smell her all the way down the road. Are you really going to let them all be together not neutered? IMO that is a bit unkind, think what it does to a human man to be teased! Plus some dogs can be uncharacteristically vicious when their desires are frustrated, either to you or one another.

I really, really wouldn't let them all together if she's in season. It will lead to some horrendous fights between the two male dogs and they could really hurt each other.

She might be humping them at the minute but believe me, they'll soon get the idea!

Don't even have them together, it can literally take seconds!

I had a B***H on heat with a full dog and it's not something I'll do again, she's being spayed as soon as it's been three months since her last season and she's stopped producing milk (she had a phantom). It was a complete and utter nightmare, I could not relax for three weeks for a second and then there was the worry after for a month or so incase he had "caught" her and she was pregnant. It would have been horrible as he's a big hairy collie and she's a little tiny jack/chi X.

They will find any way possible to mate, I caught her standing on a floor cushion to try and make herself taller for him!

You might think it's sweet and in a way it is but a litter of unwanted puppies is definitely not fun!

Don't let them be all together when she's in season, not even for a second!

Doggy hormones are amazing aren't they.

My young Poodle boy could smell a !!!!! on heat the other side of the village before I had him neutered. It would drive him INSANE and lead to him spray marking every piece of furniture in the house.
Since he was parted from his "little hairy maltesers" (as my daughter referred to his boy bits) he is so much more chilled.

You really should get your boys chopped before they start fighting and marking territory....

They WILL thank you for it ;)

I did guess Poppy may be coming into heat last week which is why she has not been down to my house since.

I have owned 2 Yorkies (male) and a King Charles (b1tch) all together in the same house for 7 year until first Yorkie died and only the b1tch was neutered - when around 1 year old. I didn't have problems with my dogs fighting with each other, only one Yorkie fighting with spayed King Charles but I put it down to jealousy - they were together for 11 years and both passed away last May & August. I can't see it being a problem with my two fighting as they are extremely close and if they do start vicious fighting then I will consider getting them neutered.

Poppy's owner was advised by vet to wait for her first heat then she will be neutered. I just hope my two don't start fighting when they can't smell if she is dog or b1tch like my other dog did with my King Charles b1tch.

Vic, I'm not trying to be horrible to you, but whilst you are busy anthropomorphising about how they are lovesick and brothers won't ever hurt each other, they could actually kill one another.

Yes. Kill is exactly the word I meant. Meaning dead.

They are going into a time of their lives when their entire biology is set up to mate at all costs. They will fight and they will take a chunk out of anybody or anything or any dog that presents an obstacle. We've already seen what those teeth can do to your house - what could they do to an ear, a paw or a throat?

We only really hear about dog attacks from larger breeds in the media, but some of those have been suggested to be where there was a female in season in the house.

Your experiences are of a spayed female, not one in season. And, although I don't have a dog right now, I can promise you that two dogs from the same litter will fight to the death if there's a sniff of a female. I've seen it. It's not pretty, and neither was the state of the owner's hand when she tried to separate them.

Oh, and if Poppy is outside at all, be prepared for your two to make a break for it every time the door is opened.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

The love sick was actually a joke, I do know Poppy is coming in to heat which is why I didn't want to have her down my house this week (and obviously through her season) :) but my two really do miss her when I take her home as they love playing with her. It was only a few month ago I didn't dare let them all down in the same room together as I was frightened they would hurt her through jealousy but now they play nicely and can be trusted.

As said I have owned two male Yorkies which were together for 11 years, both unneutered and never fought to kill even when around a b1tch. I can't see it being a problem with my two but as I said if they do get vicious with each other they will be neutered.

Sorry, my experience is with a b1tch in season and two male Yorkies all in the same house. I had my two Yorkies first, then along came my King Charles who was orginally my sisters dog. My King Charles was spayed around 1 year old after she came to live with us. She was crated while in season but as Poppy does not live with us and does not need to be at my home when looking after her, she will simply just be kept away. And as she will be getting spayed shortly I won't have a problem with them being around a b1tch in season.

My two can't escape the 6 foot fence in our back garden, it was the side fence they managed to jump which has now been heightened so they can't escape again. :)

  • Thank you for clarifying that. And for taking my comments in the spirit they were meant.

Do you honestly think they would have escaped if they were neutered? How would you have felt if one had got knocked down by a car, or if you hadn't see them go past the window and one got lost? You have another thread where you are concerned about your dogs barking at other dogs and walking on the leash, it's quite possible this is also related to them not being neutered. What your other dogs didn't do doesn't prove these two won't hurt one another nor that they won't hurt you. Just because they cannot get at a b1tch in heat or another entire male doesn't mean they can't smell them and it can't drive them wild. If one of your dogs attacks a human or another dog you may not get the chance to neuter it, the decision may be made for you by the police to PTS. :(
