Mobility car & nominated driver

I don't know much about these things so I'm asking for advise here becasue it's a mucky situation that I don't want to end up in tears.
My dad qualifies for a mobility car but cannot drive.
My kid brother (well he's 22 this year) has just passed his driving test and is after a car, but the insurance alone is over £5, 000 a year.
This seems like a match made in heaven, but here's where the tear bit may come into it.
My brother is being offered a good job with decent prospects, but the job involves a fair deal of driving and they do not have company cars.
Would my brother be allowed to use a mobility car for his own work purposes so long as it is also used for my dad, or would it solely have to be for my dad?

its a point that is a bit of grey area, mainly it has to be used with your dad in it,or your brother doing something for your dad,i would certainly not as a company car, that would be abusing a scheme that is run by a charity0

The car can be used by the nominated driver for shopping and other things without the disabled person being in the car but it must be something that benefits the disabled person, so if you go by those rules then no your brother would not be allowed to use the car for his job just because they don't provide a company car, also does your dad really want to lose his mobility allowance for a car or is he doing it just because your bro has passed his test and wants a car? Not sure if he would even qualify to be a nominated driver due to just passing his test and his young age, but I'm not 100% on that one.
Here are the rules for the use of a mobtorbility car copied from their web site.
http://www.motabilitycarscheme.co.uk/main.cfm?Type=UOYCnot all on benefits are scroungers and don't need to be bullied!0 -
also, there is a mileage limit on mobility vars ( i think its about 12,000 a year).
this isnt a direct answer to the OP's situation ... just worth remembering0 -

The answer is no. The car can only be used by or for the benefit of the claimant.
The maximum mileage is 20K a year or 60K over three, they say 20K in case the car goes back earlier.
Any other use will result in the car being taken back. Be aware, RSA thoroughly check all instances on accidents that happen without the claimant present.0 -
scooby75 just to clarify, if Motability discover misuse of one of their vehicles your father may be disqualified from the scheme indefinitely.
I know this from personal experience of an extended family member.0 -
I agree that this wouldn't be an allowable use of a mobility care, but
surely to goodness he can find a car that's cheaper to insure??? There's a couple of links in the Insurance section of the main site which would be well worth reading! My kid brother (well he's 22 this year) has just passed his driving test and is after a car, but the insurance alone is over £5, 000 a year.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Dont do it. As others said it could be claimed as misuse. I heard motorbility a while back on radio saying they are clamping down on fraud. My daughters boyfriend is 20 they both got a car insurance for under 2k sure its a small car but 2nd year insurance went down a bit. I think they pay for 10 months and get 12 months NCD. He must be realistic to not get some boy racer type car.0

OP, my daughter is 21, and passed her test first time late last year. Average insurance quote was around £4500. I read the details about car insurance on this site, and discovered that Aviva (amonst others) does not appear on insurance comparison websites. They quoted £2180 for fully comprehensive insurance on a 3 year old Cheverolet Matiz. It's definitely worth looking round and ringing a few insurers (most are freephone numbers), as well as checcking price comparison sites.0
