I think you need to ask your electrician - (although your lack of response on this point makes me think you might not have one).... There's no point you channelling and fitting boxes if they are in the wrong place. A
    sk him not us!

You cannot channel cables as you have show in your pic. Google 'safe zones' and you'll see why

The most common way is to fit a fused switch for the hood above the work top (eg next to your socket) then from this a cable to the cooker hood chimney (within the safe zones) and hard wire the chimney into an outlet. That way you don't need to access this again as the fuse is in the wortkop switch. And the outlet is hidden by the chimney.

Don't put a socket in the chimney as it will become clogged up with grease

But your electrician should know this....
  • hi, yes i'm using my builders electrician

why do you say i cannot channel as i have in my pic - it's not to scale

i will put the fused switch for the hood next to the switch for the cooker, but not channelling that til i spoken to electrician

not got hob yet and not decided between gas and elec, but will put hood high enough for gas anyway

i'm sorry as you seem like a nice person & are trying to do what ever you can to save money which is brilliant but, if you are going for gas & you havent got the hob yet how do you know you are going to put the hood high enough ? just because it is inline with the wall units that means diddy squat, diff hobs diff heights, just as a matter of interest what height from the worktop were you thinking of fitting it ?

you can't have a cable travelling at an angle across the wall as it wouldn't be in the safe zones. I really do suggest you speak to the builder or his sparks otherwise you may end up wasting your time doing work that has to be redone....
  • southcoastrgi - i was going off of approx 750mm from worktop, but hob would stick up a bit, but would have put outlet/socket up higher so that can move hood up a little depending on how raised hob is from worktop

fluffpot - sorry the black lines are just pointing to what the black boxes are, they aren't the cables. sorry for not being clear i drew that in a couple of mins at work.

gas regs are 760mm however you may find that the gas hob instructions will allow you to go lower than this

  • thanks.

ok my builder has annoyed me, by trying to help me save money doing some of the work myself he has confused the hell out of me.

he didn't say anything about me sinking the socket backs. ok i don't need to do it for the ones that won't be on show i.e under the worktop, but the ones that will be on show i need to do...

thanks for ur comments, just gotta hope my builder shows up in the monring before I head to work, so I can talk to him properly - far easier in explaining/understanding than talking on the phone!
  • yes the boxes will need to be in the wall to at least flush with the finished plaster, you may find the ones under the worktops need doing as well, a surface mounted box does stick out quite abit & if you are going to put a plug in there you may find your drawers won't close or your appliances won't go back flush with the units, i would put all the boxes in the wall,

this is why you need to speak to the sparkie first before you do any of this or you could just be wasting your time.

  • hi, spoke to my builder tonight and i only need to sink them in a little bit, coz he's going to dryline the walls n the plaster at the mo is fair bit thinner than what it will be

I've done the chasing out fine, just got another one to do and the lad who works with him will help me with the boxes sat. Still a little confused about the cooker n hood spur, but help will be on hand Sat so I can stop stressing now!

I get hot water on Wed too - 3 weeks without, think will cancel my plans wed so I can have a long soak (once i get the bits of plaster etc out the bath lol)

    thank you for answering me

no prob it can be difficult if you have never done things before, it may seem like we are getting at you but we aren't we want you to have a lovely finished job, but sometimes even the best of us have to admit defeat & get in someone that knows.

enjoy your soak it sounds like you deserve it.
