PCWorld / Dixons / Currys warranty ...

Not the extended ones you pay for, just the plain old 12-months you get with absolutely anything you buy.

If the goods go wrong after the first month, Dixons / Currys / PC World will take up to 28 days to repair it. That means no fridge-freezer, no telly, no cooker, no computer, no whatever for a MONTH while they get around to fixing it.

I only found this out because I have a laptop from PC World which is faulty.

They say Dixons Group "policy" is they can take up to 28 days to repair it.

I say they should do it quicker under the terms of the Sale of Goods Act which says it should be repaired in a "reasonable time" and with "minimum inconvenience to the buyer".

They say, we don't care!!

They also say they don't tell people about this policy when they sell you the goods because it would take too long and cause queues at the checkouts!

I'll go somewhere else next time.

Though if its happened soon after you have bought it you can get a replacement or your money back (bit late now) and cant you claim compensation if it takes too long???

  • PC World said they would have exchanged straight away if it had happened inside the first month.

It didn't .. I've had the laptop four months.

I've told them they have until next week to get it back to me, or I'll take an exchange or full refund.

After that, I don't see why I can't try a Small Claims case. It would at least test their 28-day policy.

I think a court would class 28 days to repair an item as 'reasonable'.

Please note that its a manufacturers warrenty so they get to decide what happens. Most repairs (especially thing slike laptops) actually go back to the company that made them for repair.

As I have warned customers on many a occasion, always chck the refund policy / repair policy before buying a product. Some products (meile hoovers are a good example) cannot be refunded / exchanged even if you discover a fault within 5 minutes of purchasing it! Thats what Meile decide and it has to go off for repair, which sucks, but its not the retailers fault.

Please check policies before buying products, ever since working in retail Ive always made sure to. Then you cant complain if you dont like it! If you dont like it, then dont buy there and go somewhere else. Unfortunately you will find that most say around 21 - 28 working days for repairs. And you did agree to this by buying the product, so its not something you can demand to have done earlier!

Just a heads up, I cant see them having it done by next week. Or them giving you a refund / exchange then. They tend to stick to the rules.

Comet or a DSG store? Really, it's scandalous what they train their staff in. This is wrong on every count. Ever heard of the Sale of Goods Act? This is completely the retailers responsibility. I'm not having a go at you personally because I'm sure you believe you're correct, but what they taught you was complete rubbish.

That makes no difference to the purchaser, their contract is with the supplying shop NOT the manufacturer, it is up to the shop to sort it out, what their contract with the manufacturer is should make no difference to the consumer.

Since when have Miele or the shop providing them been able to re-write the sales of goods act?

Again, since when have shops been able to re-write the sale of good act? The 28 days is not worth the paper it is written on, all the T&C's will have "This does not effect your statutory rights" on them somewhere, which overides the shops T&C's.

Whose rules? Not UK law, these companies never let anything like this get to court, they don't want their T&C's tested as they know they don't have a leg to stand on.

i used to work for the pcworld call centre, and much as this sucks, they won't refund or replace any earlier than the 28 days. In 6 months, i never saw it done.

I dont know how it would hold up in court obviously, but pcworld certainly like to believe that 28days is reasonable. They do send it off to the manufacturer for repair at this point, so it can be worth taking it up with them but again, its doubtful that you'll get anywhere as they'll no doubt send you back to pcworld again.

It depends on the item purchased. I guess a cheap biro, 28 days is a far reasonable time but if you bought a car 28 days isnt.
Its all about its lifetime. A laptop should in theory last for at least 3 years. So in that context 28days is nothing. Using the law which overides everything you can ask for a refund, repair or exchange. Doesnt matter if it says anything in their policy about time limits...its the law which governs it

  • Manufacturer or retailer ...

Actually it was an Advent laptop. That's PC World's OWN make!!! And they send it to their own repair firm, The Tech Guys.

Even more interestingly, Advent is also the name of the fella who posted above saying he thought a court would decide 28 days was reasonable. Spooky !!!

Just for the record I chased it up today with the repair firm ... and it's still in the box waiting to be looked at.

It took four days for them to pick it up, three days to deliver it and by the time they look at it it will be another five days ticked off.

    Quality service???
