Telescopes shouldn't get rained on

Ok, if you were using the telescop indoors (for whatever reason) and you accidently spilled a glass of water on it and it stopped working would you still think your not at fault?
Was it sold as water proof/resistant?0 -

You're just not getting it are you?
If I spilled anything from a teaspoonful to a bucket full of water on my telescope it would be MY fault.
My point here is that I had four major pieces of kit there. Two of which, the camera and the telescope, are meant to be used out of doors (where they may encounter high humidity, or dew fall, or even the start of a shower before being covered); and the other two items, the lap top and the inverter are definitely not normally used out of doors.
By virtue of they way they are built, and expected to be used, I would have expected them to be affected by the shower and so fail in the following order...
First the laptop.
Then the inverter.
Then (possibly) the camera.
And finally the telescope. (NOT)
Of those four items the only one that failed was the telescope.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Evidently the company agree with you since they are going out of their way to help. This speculating as to who is right is largely moot now.Thinking critically since 1996....0

There you go squeky, I am sure they can build any size you want.0 -
More than 240 degrees of my home horizon is at 40 degrees elevation or more - so my home viewing sky is very limited. And again - the light pollution is dire. There's no way I'm spending money on an observatory here because it would be a complete waste.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Assuming the manufacturer still says no (and subscribing because I am now fascinated)
Why not send a letter before action requesting either a full refund of the purchase price of telescope as it is clearly not fit for purpose or a replacement.
Add, to the letter, that should they still insist on not refunding or replacing you will escalate the case to small claims where the value claimed will increase to cover cost of bringing the claim and cost of telephone calls made and/or letters sent thus far.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily Dickinson

To be fair Baza52, if you have a cement mixer that can not get wet then I would take it back. Water is a major element for making cement and the kango would similarly be expected to be able to take some water on it.I had a lawnmower that could only be used outdoors (electric) but i couldnt use that in the rain. What about a cement mixer or kango? they are both primarily used outdoors but not if its raining.
If you had an electronic remote controlled car or similar and it got wet the retailer wouldnt cover you for water damage either.
I think you have to take some responsibility and must of had an idea it was about to rain. Surely you could see clouds.
Anyway, it seems that the supplier and the Manufacturer agree that it should not have caused that much damage. Good to see them working with the op to find a solution. Maybe a mention on the priase board for both once the it's sorted as a thanks for their help and a heads up for any potential buyers that they offer a good customer service experience?Always get a Qualified opinion - My qualifications are that I am OLD and GRUMPY:p:p0 -

As a fellow telescoper I hope you get this sorted. However you allowed the telescope to get wet. Although the downpour was sudden you were in control and failed to take the correct timely action. Expecting the supplier to take responsibility for this is stretching it but good luck anyway.0 -
The parts arrived a little after nine this morning and I swapped out the small IR sensor circuit board for the AZ encoder and a simulated alignment test worked.
So now I need a clear sky to test it for real and assess accuracy and so on.
OVL kindly sent me a complete set of parts (and they sent them direct rather than to my retailer - which is VERY GOOD of them since they don't normally deal with the public) so if I have any residual problems I should be able to deal with them.
Cost apart from postage, if this is the cure, should be under £40 (ish) so that won't be too bad at all.
We have a forecast here for a clear night so I have my fingers crossed...Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there.
