Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Robin, hi hunny, have just spent the morning reading your diary.
First off a big hug. I was feeling very emotional reading what you have been through and am now in tears about dear CD. Sounds like she had a wonderful beach walk and delicious chicken dinner first. xxx0 -
Sad news Robin. As LAM said the last day sounded just perfect.Be the change you want to see -with apologies to Gandhi

Dear Robin and of course Dear Clever Dog, so sorry to hear your sad news. I hope you are not suffering too much and that you are looking after Dear BC as I'm sure he is struggling to understand where PCD has gone.
I'm so sorry that this is my 1st post, I've read your diary over a few days and it's made me smile and made me sad and now I wish I'd posted sooner.
DPCD's last day sounded lovely.
Lots of hugs and well wishes for you all

Written afternoon 12.2. Interrupted by arrival of DS2 - too tired to come back and post last night once he'd gone, sorry. Feeling too rough today to re-write it, sorry.
Well, it's all over.
Thank you so much to everyone who has been kind enough to keep our little Nest in your thoughts, and even more thanks for all the lovely supportive messages..
Blind Dog simply had no will to keep going after PC's Dog - his lifelong companion - left us on Sunday (at exactly the same time of the morning as her Master had departed - that shook me!). Late last night BD became very restless, so we settled down on the freezing patio - where both PCD and BD insisted they wanted to be - for our second vigil. As dawn beckoned BD was suddenly in pain, so I summoned Uncle Doctor to give him the last gift; freedom. His kidneys had failed, the vet said.
After being up all Saturday night, I managed to bury PCD on Sunday, but it took all day and would not have been possible except that the hole was already prepared. As I was up again all last night, am quite incapable of performing the same service for BD. So DS2 has left work early and should be on his way here now; bless him. All I've got to do is cook him 'a proper dinner' and then - oh blissful thought - I shall be able to sleep.
It is comforting to think of PCD and BD grown young once again, racing over Rainbow Bridge into eternity as they follow his scent, searching for the spirit of their Master. It is fitting that PC should have two of our companions with him on his exploration of the next realm, while two remain with me. A kind of balance has been achieved. (Sorry if that thought is a little fanciful).
I feel sad, but relieved; the emotional intensity of the last few days all drained away as BD took his final gentle breath.
Having sat the death watch three times in the last half year, I sincerely hope that The Lesson has now been well and truly given; there's much to meditate upon and learn from it all.0 -
